So I love my G&L L5500 with EMG pickups. I've read plenty of mixed reviews but the size, weight and string spacing work perfectly me. I find that the EMG pickups sound great direct into the house with the EQ flat or with just minor tweaking. Even better, running it through my MarkBass preamp first provides me with a nice, deep tone with plenty of character and a very tight thump that gets consistent kudos.
That said, I've read on other TB posts that upgrading from 9v to 18v can make a significant improvement to dynamics and character of the guitar.
The EMG site says...
"Q: Can I use multiple batteries? A: Yes. If you've got room for multiple batteries in your guitar, you can use two batteries wired in series to power your onboard circuitry at 18 volts. The output level will not appreciably increase, but you'll have increased headroom and crisper transients."
Here are my questions...
1. Is the 9-18v upgrade safe for the EMGs in G&L?
2. Does anyone have experience with this mod? Does it really make a noticeable difference?
3. Are there any other mods or upgrades that you would recommend for the L5500?
