G&L project ~

I just received an old L-2000 body (in pretty poor repair) with this neck plate, and I'm wondering if anyone could tell me exactly what year it's from? So far, I think I've been able to ascertain that it's somewhere between '83 and '85...

Bueller...? Bueller...? ~~~ Bueller...?

I think you're close, probably more towards '85 if I had to guess. Here's an '83 L-1000 with a B01xx...number. '83 is when the numbers switched to the neck plates. But chrome like yours likely puts it somewhat later than '83 IME.

Edit: Correction....just checked the serial on my (former) '88 El Toro. Which evidently means to me, that yours could be almost anywhere from '84 onwards.

Roger ~ copy... MUCH THANKS!

Found this in the registry:

Showing the date stamped on the body.

Out of 87 basses in the registry that are within the range from B034000 to B035000, most are ‘ASAT Bass semi-hollow’ or ‘ASAT Bass’ with a few SB-2’s. Ranging mostly from years 2002 to 2004.

Furthermore, one can see that about 20 occurrences in that same serial number range are labelled:
“Neck or neckplate only (with S/N)”
Comments are: ‘Unfinished bass neck plate, seen on eBay (or reverb) from 2019 to 2022’
‘Finished’ neck plates at G&L are generally black crinkle powder paint.

I dare assume the neck plate you have is one of those…

I agree it looks like it was intended for the crinkle coating and never got applied.

@YARAH8
The plate you have seems to come from defecting (unfinished) batches of neck plates intended for ASAT Basses, ASAT Basses semi-hollow and SB-2's, during years 2002 to 2005.
These plates arrived - as neck plates only - on the market throughout near a decade.
I'm pretty much convinced there is no relationship with the bass body you have.
