G&L that just sold on the bay

This looks like a nice bass. Is this a natural finish on a mahogony body, or do they have another name for it. I kind of like the finish. Is it rare, and would it be hard to find another one like this?

Many of the early 80's G&L L-1000s and L-2000Es were mahogany. You do see them pop up on the bay from time to time. They do not make them like that anymore unless you get them to special build it.

I really like that finish, too bad someone made it active. But, maybe it will sell for a little less because it's been modded. Would be easy enough to revert back.

1) that's not a factory installed preamp, tho it looks like an L2000 preamp, kinda interesting I guess, if you like it
2) that's a re-fin, or at least I've never seen one like it. nice looking wood.
3) there's another, even older mahogany one "on there" right now. A similar one sold there last week, before that, it'd been quite a while since I'd seen one.

if its a refin, what color is that exactly? And did they do natural finishes on mahogony wood? if so is it dark or lighter than that?

You'd have to ask the seller-if he even did the refin-what color he used.
G&L did several finishes on 'hog, among them three tone tobacco sunburst and trans-red...kinda like the old Gibson EB series basses.

Yessir, that'd be the one that sold about 2 weeks ago IIRC...looks a lot like one of the ones on there now...

I checked the dates of your post and the dates of my purchase - This poor baby was the victim of a bad amateur make-over.

A preamp was added - pretty poor job. The body was stripped and refinished - I think tung oil. The neck/setup was a mess -with shocking amateur fret job (I told the seller that there was a misrepresentation of the condition but opted to keep it).

It's got a loving home now and gets lots of TLC. I've fixed the frets, set it up properly, and cleaned it up. It's a beautiful piece of wood and it sounds awesome. I'm considering having G&L restore the electronics to original/current L-1000 state.

It's kinda like a stray dog that becomes your best friend.

If you have the MFD and it looks like you do, you can restore the electronics pretty simply or have a local tech do it for you. Three pots and a switch.
