G&L Tribute L-2000

Thanks. Do the Tribute SB-2 and JB-2 have the same neck? And they are both thinner/narrower than the Tribute L-2000? I am unfortunately not able to play one.

The tribute SBs and JBs have slimmer and slightly narrower necks than the 2000. Still, I didn't find the neck on the 2000 that chunky, you get used to it over time and it's quite comfortable. Still, if you were set on the L2000 the other tributes aren't really similar tonally, so bear that in mind. Try/listen first if you can.

What's the biggest tonal need? If you need beefy rock tones, and like a small neck, the SB-2 is the winner, hands-down. If you have more use for J-bass tones, then the JB-2 is your winner, although pickup upgrades can turn a JB-2 into one of many different variations on a theme. My USA JB-2 has a QMT and Quarter Pounders in it, to deliver a "J-bass on steroids/P-bass with a spice-rack" sound. The L-2000 has active circuitry, and a rep for being very tonally versatile, but, in the Tribute series, the drawback is the neck, if you prefer 'em skinny.

Cheapest solution if you love the L2000 Tribute and don't want to pay for the rare used L2K USA version with a slimmer neck, is to buy a used JB-2 Tribute and swap necks, part out the the JB-2 or sell as a body, and sell the L-2000 neck. Or see if anyone would buy the JB-2 w/L2k neck for $225 or so. SB2 Tribby necks don't work - wrong bolt count. JB2 Tribby neck is, I believe (ask CraigB for sure) a drop in to the L2000 Tribute.

Also, where can I buy an SB-2 Tribute in black? I have been looking online and nowhere seems to carry (musicians friend, GC, usual places I look). Thanks.
It seems that there are two Tribute SB-2s in Black on Ebay right now.

G&L Tribute Series SB-2 4 String Metallic Black Basswood Body Rosewood Fretboard | eBay

This looks to be an older model with pearl pickguard.
G&L TRIBUTE SB-2 ELECTRIC BASS GUITAR w/GIG BAG - NEW! | eBay

Other than those two, I don't know...

I'm not so sure you can swap necks between the SB2 and the L2000. The latter has the six bolt joint while the SB2 has the standard four bolt. The spacing between bolts seems the same but I can't be sure how well it would fit. I personally would advise against it, but it's up to you.

+1.

The JB2 and L2K necks are a direct swap, and the JB2 neck has the thinner 1 1/2" nut width.

The SB2 neck is four bolt, and isn't a direct drop in for the L2K.

Rare? AFAIK the #8 neck is pretty common in the USA version. Not the standard, of course, but lots of retailers order it with the #8 neck...

Less than 20 percent of the used ones for sale here are narrow. Lots of retailers today may be ordering new ones with that neck, but you won't find a 1.5" inch at the nut L2000 for sale here less than $750 and you'll only see a few per year, used.

So again for someone looking for an L2000 and already has a Tribute version - they might have to be searching for a while for a US thin necked version available cheaply.

I have the JB2 trib in natural/rosewood and love it!
I, too, find the L2000 trib neck a little too wide but love the different tones I can get with it. I sold one before (sunburst w/ maple board) but just ordered one (sunburst/rosewood) which should get here Monday! I wanna give it another try. Maybe I should just spend more time with it and get used to the neck. If not, I'll sell the neck and put a JB-2 neck on it!
I also had a L2500 trib with the carved top but had to sell it when I needed some cash last year. Great basses these tributes!
Willrocks, I also dig the black sb-2. There was 1 on ebay for cheap a few weeks ago.

Hello
I am looking to get a G&L Tribute L-2000, but the neck is a bit too chunky for me. Is it possible to order it from anywhere with the #8 J style neck that is available on the USA models?

I have one and I found the neck too chunky until I stuck a set of Sadowsky flats on there and got the action just right - now there's no problem! Super low action makes all the difference.

Thanks everybody for the help. I have found a Tribute SB-2 in black and am nearly ready to order.

One last thing to help, can anybody compare the necks of the Tribute SB-2 and Tribute L-2000 to today's Standard MIM J Basses? I don't live anywhere near a G&L distributor to play for myself. Thanks!
