G&L vs. Lakland

I would go with G&L and get more for your money! G&L is honest about where there instruments are made, either in the U.S. or overseas. laklands, on the other hand are either made in Indonesia or assembled in the U.S. from parts made for them by Cort. Cort is in Korea! So for lakland to call it "U.S." series is a bit of a stretch to put it politely! And what they charge for these instruments, ridiculous! You can see and hear this for yourself on good ol' you tube. I bash lakland every chance I get because their warranty card is made from imported toilet paper!!

Didn't know that about lakland, more evidence turning me pro g&l

Whatever you do, if you go with G&L make sure to stick with a USA model. I recently ordered a G&L Tribute and the quality is definitely nowhere near that of my Lakland Skyline. You can really tell that Lakland gives the Skylines a lot of attention in the Chicago factory before they are sent out, while Tributes arrive in your hands they way they left Inonesia. Broken/bent knobs, bad fretwork, and bad electronics are pretty common on Tributes. Especially mine. This is ONLY on Tributes, not USA G&L's.

I am actually quite certain that is not true... The Korean skylines were made in the Cort factory.

Cort makes the Skyline series for Lakland. They made them in their Korean plant first and when that one closed down they moved production to the Indonesian plant. They are shipped to the US without electronics (expect for the 01 series) and they get the US electronics installed and setup in Chicago. The US series is entirely made in the US. I have no idea where you got the idea that the US line used Korean made parts but it's simply not true. The bodies and necks were milled in the US and these days most of them are actually CNC'd right in house at the Lakland factory in Chicago. You can bash them if you don't like them but at least do so with actual facts and not false info.

of which there isn't. respectfully, you're not just wrong, you're out-right lying.

Let me be clear... If you had said "I think", or "my cousin told me"... I'd give you the benefit of the doubt, but since you state it as (unsupported) fact, then go on to boast that you bash Lakland at any chance you get, it crosses from being incorrect to spreading falsehoods.

I worked for a bass shop that carried both G&L and Lakland... I've got nothing against G&L, I tried to move them... but in the end, we sold Laklands 5:1 over the G&L... and that's Skylines over the G&L US in most cases... the customers noticed issues that made their decision for them... one issue was finish problems on several of the US models we had... a few had orange peel, and almost all had overspray into the cavity.

I do have one thing against G&L...well, BBE in reality... they wouldn't return our calls for service... EVER. One US JB2 that was on the wall the day the store opened was shipped to us with a hump in the fretboard around the 14th fret that we didn't notice... it sold within a few weeks of the store opening... The customer that bought it didn't notice it in the store, but brought it back- we contacted G&L and our rep, no reply. 2 weeks no reply. a month no reply. We refunded the customer... finally 2 months later had our luthier strip the frets plane the board and refret. Sold it as used for way less than dealer cost almost a year later.

Well, there's always one (or two) in every crowd. Lakland is also honest about where their basses are made. Both the Skyline and US models are excellent basses. Just depends on your budget and personal taste. My #1 is a Skyline. Been my #1 for almost 9 years. Bulit like a freakin' tank. Seriously, hundreds and hundreds of gigs on it and the frets are still in very good shape. Finish is also holding up very well. Neck is straight and stable. Pretty impressive considering I run my basses hard and put 'em up wet. And yes, I'm a fan boy.

Back to the OP: You really can't go wrong, IMO. Just depends on your budget and the sound in your head that you're trying to get.

And have fun!! That's what it's alllll about!

Aaaa.......where did you get your data from!?

I know for a fact that the US basses are made from bodies and necks made in the USA...as a matter of fact, I have seen them made.....just stating "facts" as I have seen them with my own eyes.

you seem to have it in for them for some reason which is VERY unclear....as for their warranty, I have seen them honor "warranty" from second and third owners (who have owned the instrument WAY beyond the warranty period!) and have seen them fix things for free or for a pittance when it was clearly NOT a warranty issue.

Again - things I have personally seen....and experienced.

back to the normally scheduled postings!
