G String sounding "twangy"

G strings are usually single wound. The other strings in a set are usually double (sometimes triple) would. G strings are often twangy - I wouldn't assume it's a fault in the bass; it's probably the string. Some folks will use a G out of a "duller" set (pressure wounds or flats, or even an older set) to better match the rest of the set.

I have no experience with MM, and the other advice provided already about a set-up/action is probably pretty good.

Sometimes a string can get kind of twisted when it's put on, and that can result in "twangy' out-of-phase kind of sound. Something to try is to release the tension on the G string, pull the wraps off the tuning peg and then, starting at the bridge, using two fingers, just run along the length of the string which can allow a subtle twist to get released. It's not a guarantee but it has worked for me on occasion.

good luck OP!

The strings on that bass don’t sound particularly new. It does sound like you’ve got a lot of fret buzz. If it’s between the 7th fret and on up, it probably means you have too much relief in the neck and the saddles are too low in an attempt to compensate.

It’s May. At this time of year, necks tend to straighten out. You need someone who is experienced at this - guessing isn’t helpful at getting you to a good setup.

Hi I have this issue on my MusicMan Sterling where the G string sounds weird for some reason and I don't know how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated, thanks
You need to raise the g string a little. It's bottoming out.

But, the g string is twangy regardless. That's why it's the "treble side"

It's thinner, and higher pitched
