On one of my basses, this cheap Yamaha 4 string, I've noticed the G string seems to be off in it's own little world compared to the other 3. The top 3 sound fine together, the same level of bassy, growly, tone, but once I get to the G string, the sound changes completely, like it's too high pitched. Obviously it's the highest octave string, but it takes on this kinda tinny annoying tone that doesn't fit well with the rest. I've tried adjusting pick-up height, changing strings, etc., but it doesn't seem to help. The intonation is fine throughout as well. It's strung up with either D'Addario 55-110 rounds or Rotosound 65-130s, can't really remember.
I'm trying to decide on a decent set of Precision-style replacement pick-ups for it as well. My budget's in the sub $150 range, and I'm trying to get a set that'll work well for switching off between this nice deep, punchy sound, which mainly relies on the top pup, and one that'll be good for a more hardcore sound well suited for overdrive. Pretty much just leaving a pinch of the top pick-up, and maxing out the one closest to the bridge.
