G1's 3rd Build

Right so after the first coat of finish I wasn't quite happy so I've since sanded it back to do some more touch up work, but here is a pic before I sanded it back:

I just finished up the knobs yesterday which came out real nice!

The links in my first couple of posts are to my second build.
My first build was a gentle introduction. I built an ashbory bass:

Were you an accomplished woodworker prior to building basses? your skills are quite good for only a 3rd build. very impressive!

My curmudgeon status will show a bit when I say that I really don't like the look (or function) fo so many knobs on a beautifully crafted instrument. But that also follows my view of playing live: I'm a 'set it and forget it' bassist....

excellent work!..... after dozens of instruments (maybe over a hundred by now) I've yet to tackle pickup winding, so I'm doubly impressed.

Actually my wood working skills are somewhat lacking. I want to improve quite a bit more before I start attempting to market my basses, but I do spend quite a lot of time on them. I'm keen to start tackling some other wood working projects in the near future, in order to try and improve my wood working skills.

The main reason why this bass was quite a few controls is because I'm not sure how the pickups will turn out so I'm trying to make it as versatile as possible. I don't think I'm adverse to lots of controls, but obviously complicated for the sake of complicated serves little purpose.

vbasscustom: The paw did fit the design nicely but it didn't really have any 'meaning' to it. IMO everyone would have asked whats the paw about and I would have been left with 'umm... I dunno, it looked kinda cool'. Either way I was keen to put something there. I quite enjoy doing inlays!

yes, i see what you mean. and if ou enjoy doinf inlays thats awsome, it will gice you so much versatility in doing FB markers and such, and if someone wants their bass inlayed to hell, then you can say oh boy, more inlays

Finally got the preamp in!! Spent all of today wiring and a large part of last saturday.

Had 2 wire the 2 stacked humbuckers, the piezo, a homemade buffer for the piezo, the preamp and all the pots. Also added an LED near the sound hole which came out nice!

Certainly enough wires to be getting on with. Maybe the next one will be passive ;)

Getting some cool sounds. Although some problems with the piezo. The aguilar preamp takes 18v but the buffer only takes 9v, so it's grabbing it's voltage from between the batteries. However when I plug the piezo and buffer in, the LED stays on all the time regardless to whether a jack is plugged in (I'm using a stereo jack to seperate the ground from the 0v). So I'll have to pull the buffer out and have a look for shorts. But otherwise glad that the wiring is done :)

I'll finish her up tomorrow and grab some pics / sound clips.
