Galli Jazz Flats?

Hi, all.

Does anyone here have any experience with Galli Jazz Flats, and can share their thoughts? I did a search and didn't find much useful information. They don't seem to be among the most well-known flatwound strings.

I'm looking for a change for my fretless P that has been wearing the same set of GHS Precision Flats for about 10 years now. I really like the GHS strings, but I would like some that 'sing' a little more. GHS PFs are mostly all thump.

If it helps, after getting a set of LaBella "Beatle Bass" DTFs for my Höfner, I think they are the best sounding (and feeling) flats I've ever used. The problem is that LaBella strings are not readily available in my part of the world, and I can get a set of Galli strings nearby. In fact, the bass is in the shop where they sell those strings right now, so I can easily ask the tech there to put them on while he is working on my bass. $75NZD is no small amount of bread, though. I thought I'd better check before I buy them.

After watching a "various flatwounds" demo video on You Tube, of a guy playing Galli Jazz Flats on an EBMM Stingray, I put a set of them (that I'd bought on spec) on my new Stingray Special 4HH. I have to say that I'm happy that I did. On this active bass (which is how I run it), and for what and how I play, the Galli's are proving to be a very, very good choice. I have GHS Precision Flats on my '78 P-Bass, precisely because they are all about the Thump - which is what I want from that bass. IMO, the Galli's, while they will thump if you want them too, aren't much like the PF's at all. Of all the flats I've tried and use? I think they're most similar to Fender 9050s, tone-wise; a good, useful bottom; a nice, wide midrange; and decent (but not too bright) highs. The Gallis are flexible - but not quite as flexible as TIs, which I have on an Alembic. They"re just stiff enough, IMO, to work well with a pick- which I use a lot. And.. man, are they ever smoooth. These things are the slickest strings I've ever played. And, for my dry hands and fingers, they weren't sticky at all either - ever. They seem to break in pretty quickly, too (unlike some Austrian strings I could mention...). So, yeah, I'm happy with them; very happy indeed. AFAIC, they're the Forever Strings for my Stingray...

You are so right about the lack of choice when it comes to flats in New Zealand, it is so annoying.
Online is the cheapest way to get strings here, but Music Planet and Musicworks will order something in for you, but it is hard to know what you want from youtube clips.
At the moment I have Thomastik Infeld Jazz Flats on my 5 string and GHS Precision Flats on my fretless, my GHS PFs aren't that thuddy yet, so they can still sing a bit, the Thomastik Jazz Flats have a far more melodic tone to them, lower tension than standard but that doesn't bother me in the slightest, it actually makes it easier to add expression because it is easier to physically manipulate the strings.
Which part of the country are you in, you can come and give them a spin if you want.

Thanks for chiming in! Where did you get your TI Jazz Flats? I've thought about putting them on the fretless J. There's a whole world of just flats out there, and they aren't exactly cheap. Sometimes all the options are overwhelming. I've got D'Addario black tapes on my fretless J at the moment, which are pretty nice, but a little dull.

You are right there are so many sets of flats out there, that we have to put a bit more effort in getting. Even the lighter chromes set isn't available from the Rockshop. I was doing a bit of research into what is available worldwide, there's even a set of flats by a company called lenzner that are intended to be tuned in fifths C1, G1, D2, A2, E3, last time I tuned in fifths, I did it with D'Addario Nickel Rounds, I always thought that would of been better if I had used flat, now I found an option for that I may do that again.

Those D'Addario Tapewounds are what I am thinking of putting on my fretless, I think I will kind of like dark, but I am also thinking of getting a .035 string so I can tune it A1,D2,G2,C3 because I kind of find myself either soloing on my fretless or laying down lines with an octaver (gets a cool synth sound) so I think that may be a good option for me.

The jazz flats came on a six string bass I got from trademe, I had them on there for a bit, then I put them on my 5 except for the low B.

I asked at musicworks, they can get the JF344 set. But after looking online they are cheaper from Amazon. Which is where I'll be ordering my as I would want the JF345-C set.

No unfortunately I am not local, I am living in Levin in the Horowhenua.

If you do end up with the Galli flats I'd be very interested in your thoughts on them.

I wish I had got into flats earlier especially when I was at the NZSM.

The videos sound a lot like the new Sadowsky Blue Label Flats when fresh. Descriptions of the flexibility, combined with the tension numbers seem to match as well (guessing on tension based on relative truss rod adjustments of the Blues).

Galli has increased quality unbeliavable in the last 20 yrs.

I bough 2 sets of Galli jazz flats and my opinion after a short period is that they're very unbalanced as far as the B & E strings being very dead from the start and the A, D & G strings much more clanky (trebly metallic) much like D'Addario Chromes which I don't particularly like. So problem is, half of the set is very old school and the other half is too bright. Somewhere in the middle would have been preferable.
Where this string really shines is in the smoothness.
I'm hoping something good will develop as they break in… hopefully fast.

Did you have to make any changes to the nut? I have the mahogany one that came with black rubber. Swapped for the thunder reds.

Tbh, I may have to get a second one. The thunder reds have a cool tone, but I also would like the version with flats.... At least collecting ubass takes up less space (keep wife happy...)

I didn't change the nut, but that depends on the action you prefer, I like lower action.
