best way to set up any amp from the get go is run it all at flat, all effects off, and GENTLY tweak it from there....
on my GK 1001 rb i run all the freqs at flat, contour turned up to about 1 oclock, 4/5 pushed in, boost up to 8 ( i love the sound when you slide up your E string with that boost cranked....the growl is awsome sounding! )
alot of times i really crank the EQ treble up, and down almost all the way on my bass, gets a nice bright sound without the "string clank", that mainly has to do witht he fact that i dig in my strings like crazy.
