Gallien-Krueger MB150-112 vs. Roland Cube 100

Can anybody who has played both do a quick comparison of these two combos? I'm not sure which will suit my needs better. Most of my gigs are musical theatre, upright/doubling, jazz/big band, and a bit of rock, which is why I need the extension speaker output. Which of these is the louder, more portable, better sounding amp? Thanks for your time.

if you search the model number you'll find quite a few fans of the MB150. I heard one briefly that was on the verge of disintegrating (old speaker being played too hard) it almost kept up with a 100db stage volume. if the speaker wasn't old (this model was like 20 yrs old) it might have done o.k. especially with the extention speaker (only 12 lbs!!) they had the speaker replaced and its rocking like new, i guess.

I'd seriously investigate the GK MB150. roland is small, cheap and sounds like it to me. not saying it can't DO the job, but it sounds bland and boxy to me. extra effects might be cool though...

My review of the Roland includes a little comparison to the G-K. It's post #23 in this thread:

You won't go wrong either way. I think if refined tone is the priority, the G-K is probably a better bet. It's also more portable. If volume and value are paramount, go with the Roland. It sounds great too IMO, and with all the gritty amp models is probably a better choice for rock.

The GK is my choice. It will handle everything you say you'll use it for, but you'll have to watch out for the rock stuff. Extension cab for sure for that. The GK is also a dream to carry.

I don't think the Roland is in the same league. It's not bad and it would probably handle the rock gigs, but won't sound nearly as good for everything else.

I played in a band with 1-electric guitar, 1-acoustic guitar, and a percussionist with many hand drums and other toys

I played every gig with that band with my GK 150MBS and the MBX-12 extension cab. My Lakland USA Hollowbody sounded super with the GK amp sometimes without PA Support.

I think you can't go wrong with the GK 150MBS, and as was stated before I too do not think the Roland is in the same league.

Well, then it was an older MB200. I owned both models and the MB150 was a piece of junk compared to my old MB200 (which I would still have if not for an accident :bawl: ). The MB150 would constantly shut down (with or without an extension speaker) when pushed while my old MB200 never did.

The MB200 also seemed more powerful overall which I found strange since it was suposed to be only 100 watts while the MB150 is suposed to be 150 (which doesn't make sense with the model names/numbers either).

Never tried the Roland, although my cube 30 (guitar version) is great for running the effect side of my Uni-Bass through. :bassist:

Thanks Phat, for the clarification, now that you mentioned that, you are correct my friend does have the 200. whats funny is last night all I did was have dreams abouthe Microbass amp. it was like I was looking at close up pictures of it all night , every possible angle. I think I dreamed several time of being happy about moving it and how light it was :p

Well, I have a GK MB115 and I chose this amp because of its very deep sound, good volume and low weight.

I use it to amplify an electric upright and it perfectly adds the low range that the upright lacks because of its tiny body.

Edit...

The GK MB115 seems to need a grounded outlet otherwise it will produce a terrible hum. The problem however is that a grounded outlet is not always available. I am not happy with that.
