Gallien-Krueger MB2-500: Part II

Hey Jimmy, I live right up the road from you in Apex, and I grew up in the Bull City....right now I'm working in Herndon, VA. You need to be aware that the A00 version has different EQ settings when flat compared to later versions of this AMP. I've had both and the earlier models were thought to be heavy on the bass so you may need to cut back the bass on yours a bit with 12's. Earlier and later versions sound great through my Neo 210 cab. We must remember that how a bass sounds through a flat amp also depends on technique, strings, type of bass etc. Let me know if you have questions about this amp head. I've invested a lot of time with these and have grown to to love it with when paired with my Roscoe LG3005.

Just got my MB2 500 last week. Currently playing thru headphones as won't be picking up the GK Neo 210 cab I want until end of August (I can only afford to get stuff one thing at a time, and am trying to wait until sales/money off offers come along). A00, so far no problems...of course, most of the problems described in this and the first MB2 thread don't seem to show up until you hook it up to a cab and start cranking the volume, so guess we'll see once the cab becomes part of my rig. So far, though, I really like what I'm hearing thru the headphones...

I feel like an idiot. I've been wondering why my Gibson Thunderbird sounded so lifeless through my MB2-500. I was diming my Contour knob like an idiot and scooping all that tbird mid goodness right out of my sound (not really reading the manual or giving much thought to what the Contour knob does). Now with the contour flat (left) and my EQ section set up for "hard rock" suggestion my tbird tone has come alive. I don't know if it's the bass, amp or cab (earcandy bassbomb) but this is the growliest (in a good way) tone I've ever heard / played with. These little amps are impressive.

Gtrslngr, We just played at an open mic over your way in Cary at Mac's Tavern a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the notes on EQ. If you take a look back at the pic I posted you'll see that through some experimentation I was on the way to some of the settings you suggested. I ended up running the bass at 9:00, the two mids at 3:00 and the treble at 12:00. Good advice though, all the way around.

Unfortunately, I also ended up sending this little marvel back to GK this week because it developed some of the other A00 series problems, but on that note let me add my voice to the chorus of praise for the excellent customer service at GK. I contacted Bob and Brian, and not only were they immediately responsive to my questions, they went over and beyond the call of duty in offering to replace my MB2 with a newer model.

That's the kind of customer service that will keep me coming back, and will make sure I spread the word to peers/students/etc. :)

As a bit of an update on my situation I sent the defective unit back to GK and they were right on top of sending me a brand new unit (an A06 serial number in fact!) that works great!

Thanks GK for making this little marvel, and thanks for standing behind it!
