Gallien Krueger MB212-II Report

I received my replacement unit Friday. It arrived damaged. Came straight from the factory like this. The box and wrapping showed no sign of damage, only the amp.

FYI, Not sure if you saw my thread where I ordered a MB212v2 and it also came damaged with no signs of trama on the shipping box. It seems to have taken a hit and then was put in a different box. I don't know but it's scared me off for now until I hear a MarkBass 151P.

Hey Bob! I was told they were reworking the packaging for the combos, which makes sense. Sounds like ours weren't the only problems they've had shipping these puppies. To be sure they're not the most bulletproof cabs I've ever handled but therein lies the tradeoff. I had a GK 410RBH that literally fell off the tailgate of my truck as I drove away from a particularly rambunctious tear down, (had to make to In N Out by 1:30am). The cab literally landed on the ground and skidded a bit. Aside from some rat fur road rash the cab was fine and played like nothing ever happened.
BUT
It weighed a ton.
In real life we, (at least I), don't treat our equipment like garbage men tossing galvanized trash cans into the compactor.
I used my current MB212-II last night at an extremely loud practice, (ears still ringing), and it held its own. Once eq'd into the room this puppy really sang. And I loaded out with my bass in the right hand, amp in the left.
Third times a charm. Despite the hiccups I've been having I'm going to tough it out. The volume/tone/weight factor can't be beat.

That certainly is what I am looking for. I turned all the knobs to noon including Gain and Master and it shook the little bass room at Guitar Showcase but I didn't feel like it could go much higher without farting.
I agree. Just the QC has me a little worried.
edit: Just saw they have a factory service center right by my house and I called to make sure they were there and they are so I guess I should relax. MarKbass is 400 miles away. Hmmmm

MarkBass service seems to be black and white, either real good or really lacking. Not consistent yet.
Local GK tech said the same thing, mostly horror stories with the LA Markbass service office. I bet they are swamped
Unfortunately I'll be finding out soon. My new MB LM3 has been doing the thermal protection shutdown routine so I guess I'm going to have to send it in.

I tried the MB 151P Jeff Berlin today and it was not up to snuff for me. Not enough headroom. I think the 102P had more in it, but I think the MB212 would be better for me.
That said tonight I made an offer on a Mesa M9 and if I get that I'll probably pick up a Mesa 115 RR I am checking out from CL. Going back to my roots and big iron but at least I will have the head room I really want

So glad to hear you dig the MB212-II !!
Sucks you have a couple issues, but seems they got straightened out. I've played 15-20 gigs with mine and had about 8 full band practices and jam by myself every day since I got it. I think it sounded better and better the more I played it. And you wouldn't relieve the number of people that laugh when I carry that into a venue. Then I play it and they wanna ask a millions questions about it. Haha!

Oh! And my buddy, Anthony Damron, (who is a member here but I'm not sure of his name) needed to borrow my MB212 for 2 back to back nights due to his Genz Benz shuttle 12.2 being in the shop for a fan. He ran his GB through an Ampeg 410HLF cab so I was worried it wouldn't be enough for him. He was BLOWN by how awesome the GK did so he went out and bought a 212! Except he one up'd me and got the new Neo Berg 212 cab. I'll stick with my GK any day though.
Moe you're killing me! The new Bergie 212 is next on my list. Getting ready to order one now, just looking for a place here at the house where I can hide it from my wife. She pretty much knows all the hiding places already lol!!! Most likely will trade my AE410 out for the new CN212, (but I'm already experiencing separation anxiety).
I'm glad to hear the GK is working well in all situations. Judging from what I heard the other night I think it's going to be a long termer. Your review pretty much the deciding factor for me. It really is an amazing combo.

Hey Bob I'm not surprised the 151P wouldn't cut it for you. I just never saw that combo holding up in high volume situations. I tried it once at GC and when I really cranked it looked like the speaker was going to jump out of the cabinet it was moving around so much.
And you can't go wrong with the Mesa rig. Headroom for miles, (or Max Headroom as we used to say in the 80's lol). I've often wondered if I'm just being a wuss by going with the lighter rigs. In all reality I can still lift 75 lbs and put it on a cart, (I'm not THAT old), but judging from what I'm reading all over TB I'm not alone in being wussy lol!
If the M9 deal falls through you might want to try the MB212-II maybe for a week or two and take it back to GC if it doesn't cut it. I bet you find it blows your preconceived notions of combos away. It did for me. Prior to this I never knew of a combo that would produce so much volume and depth, and I've owned a few. Eden Metro. SWR Redhead. GK 700RB/210 and my beloved Peavey TNT115, (before it went to that great amp heaven in the sky).

PS when you were with Suicidal Tendencies did you guys ever do a bill with The Vandals or The Descendants? Bill Stevenson and Josh Freeze are like my two favorite drummers.

and have been using ever since. I gig every
Weekend fri and sat and never have had
a problem with it.
Had 4 of these things delivered, all 4 had damage from shipping! That and the fact that they rattle led me to Markbass...but I did prefer the tone of the GK to the Markbass...shame they can't get a handle on the build quality/shipping thing?
