12 ohm 210 is ODD. That would mean the speakers are either 6 ohm or 24 ohm voice coils! I would "guess" the MB800 would output around 350 watts @ 1% N+THD.
I didn't want to go there...

I believe they are 6 ohm speakers. Plenty about this in the Barefaced thread. I was simply interested in knowing whether there are any stated specs for the MB800 into 12 ohms, or whether anyone has any specific knowledge.12 ohm 210 is ODD. Thanks. That pretty much sums it up and confirms my searches. I am assuming that the MB800 will be comfortable into 12 ohms. There are no stated specs for a 12-ohm load from GK.

I'm pretty sure not - IIRC, Alex custom spec'd both the 10" & the 12" drivers he's using now.Yeah, but I'm pretty sure Barefaced is using off-the-shelf drivers.
Absolutely correct. Alex is relatively unusual that he basically designed his speakers and had (I think) Eminence build them to his specs. His 12" driver is quite unique in the extra piston-like movement he has built into it. Again, I had no intention of derailing this thread as my question was mainly concerning the MB800. Plenty of info about Barefaced on their site or on the Barefaced thread. I will say that the Barefaced Four 10 I have is quite amazing, though.I'm pretty sure not - IIRC, Alex custom spec'd both the 10" & the 12" drivers he's using now.
Hey, no need to be sorry. Discussion is good and I brought it up originally anyway so the "blame" is on me.I'm sorry for derailing the thread.
I'm still learning about wattage/resistance... Admittedly having a little trouble wrapping my head around the concept.
I recently purchased an 8ohm 400w 212 and want to chain it with a 100w 210 that's also 8ohm. The power rating of this amp at 8ohm is 500w which would be plenty of headroom, but do you think this type of power would be too much for that combo? Is the fact that I'm using 2 8ohm cabs gonna convert the power rating to 4ohm? Or if I decided to use this head with JUST the 400w 212, would I be overdoing it?
2 8ohm cabs make an4 ohm load
Which means the amp will be capable of 890 watts
The 100 watt cab will be in serious jeopardy in the setup
If you use both cabinets that will present a 4 ohm impedance to the amp, so it can potentially deliver a full 800 watts to both cabinets. This power will be split evenly between each cabinet (400 watts each), which in your case is an issue because one of the cabs is rated at only 100 watts. I would very careful not to push the amp in the this configuration.
Running just the 212 at 8 ohms with 500 watts should be fine. Again, I would be cautious as to how hard you push it.
Something to note is that an amp rarely puts out its full wattage when you're playing. It will typically only do that at peaks during very high volume playing and/or if the power amp is driven to clip/limit.
Another thing to note that the wattage rating doesn't tell the whole story. Most speakers cannot handle their full rating at low frequencies so if you crank the bass EQ on the amp and then push the output volume you may have issues exceeding the mechanical ability of the woofer even at lower volumes.
Use your ears to listen for any distortion or distress from the speakers. Be cautious about bumping the bass EQ up too high.
It certainly makes life more difficult. And with the disparity you have between cabs it's a big problem. So in a nutshell, is it safe to assume it's pretty impractical to have 2 cabs of such different power handling ratings on the same amp? - one needs most of the provided power while the other is in danger of blowing the entire time...
That would be my approach. Maybe sell it and get a second of the 212 cab? That would give you flexibility and a big, loud rig when you need it.I should just leave the weak 2x10 out of the equation, altogether?

Yup.Say I decide to get another cab to link with the 2x12 in the future (say, another 400w 8ohm 2x12), I'd have a 4ohm load, so this GK MB800 wouldn't be a bad idea - 400w to each cab.
Right?...
