The washers help protect the string where it goes through the opening in the tailpiece. If the strings are pre-tied, they come with washers already on. They will wind up being between the knot in the string and the back of the tailpiece. If your strings weren't ordered tied, then you have to do that first. The strings come with a visual guide regarding how to tie them.
