Double Bass Gary Karr?

What Gary does in his private life is not a very appropriate topic for public discussion on TB. Sorry folks. I would have closed this sooner, but I hadn't read it. Remember, if you see a post or thread that you feel needs review by the moderators, please click the icon to report the post. That way, Jeremy, Damon and I will know to take a look.

What a wonky thread! I think it is right to let it stand as long as it doesn't get too out of control. I saw them play once. Harmon played organ and it was incredible. I have several of their LPs. I think it was a huge advantage for Gary to have a committed partner who played keyboard instruments. I don't think Harmon developed those skills to play bass rep.! It can only be love!
It seems like the piano part is generally an afterthought for so much of that music but they really played as a duo. I was talking to a great bass player the other day and he said, "What Gary gave us is projection".

What in God's green earth does this have to do with Bass? Does it matter... his orientation? To tell the truth, I was happier not knowing. I consider that stuff private and personal and wouldn't want anyone prying into my personal life. He's a phenomenal bassist, can't we just concern ourselves with how to obtain some of that standard?
I understand being curious, but I don't equate his musicianship with who he's bonking...

It isn't bad to recognize a successful, presumably supportive longterm (since '71, so 43 years!) relationship in both music and life that frankly helped the instrument tremendously. Gary felt it was important enough to put the notice on the ISB site.
As I noted above, there are many wonderful bass soloists but few who are able to work that repertoire into such musical duo performances.

There is a lot of contemporary double bass repertoire for flute and bass because Bert Turetzky's wife plays flute. Extra-musical forces are always shaping the history of sound. The information that making a life as double bass soloist wasn't the only challenge Maestro Karr was up against is incredibly inspiring. We are all here for the bass and this man overcame a lot for all of us.
