Wow just stumbled onto this......One of my all time favorite albums is Mark Colby's "One Good Turn" featuring Gary King and his fretless P bass. Still love listening to Gary.

Sad to learn that Gary King passed away. Loved his work with Bob James.

I was fortunate to see him twice with Bob James. Monster groove player.

I knew him back in the '70's when he lived in the Pocono's, PA. Very sweet man; friendly, powerful, and approachable. He played a blond Starfire II bass. He used to sit in at the local hotels, doing solo sets to everyone's astonishment and delight. Steve Gilmore suggested I meet him, so I just walked up to his house, knocked on the door and introduced myself. He suggested "Learn the Masters - Study Beethoven, Debussy, The Duke." Back then he'd worked with Roberta Flack, and so many others in and around NYC. So sorry he's departed. Rest his soul and groove.

Listening to Bob James "One" on vinyl - opening track, Valley of the Shadows - Gary is laying down a simple, huge, fat line. (With Steve Gadd.) Great stuff.

Just listening to " two of a kind" for first time in over 15 years...I only have it on LP and just got my turntable back out a week or so ago.

His bass playing is very classy ... subtle but complex
