GAS ATTACK

Ok...so here is my story. Today I decided to take a trip to Bensalem Pa. to visit Bass Specialties. Considering the location i live in...the local guitar centers have pretty much dominated the local gear selling with the exception of washington music center. While wmc is a great store, (i have dealt with paul shine there on a couple of occasions and he has always hooked me up) i am not much of a Ken Smith player and that seems to be the main focus of their higher end stuff. Besides i have been wanting to play a Sadowsky and a Lakland for some time now and since no players in my area have any...it was time to make a little road trip.

The first thing i want to mention is Glen at bass Specialties is a great guy to work with. Me and My girlfriend were in there for close to two hours talking to him. He offered us bottled water and snapples out of his cooler and answered all the questions i had about anything he had in the store. He took the time to tell me about any bass i had a question about. Customer service A+++.

Now for the Gas Attack. The first bass i picked up was a Sadowsky R5-24 in trans blue. Blown away from the first note to the last. Cant stop thinking about it. I have been kicking myself ever since i left the store for not buying it on the spot. the bass had a little bit of fret buzz and Glen took it back into the tech shop and fixed it on the spot. brought it back to me. While he was adjusting it i played a lakland 55-02 deluxe. and while it was a great sounding bass in its own right...i cannot get over how clear punchy and just flat out POWERFUL the sadowsky was. The bass practically played itself. It made a hack like me sound like i knew what i was doing sometimes. I originally wanted to play a m5-24 but he sold the one on his website not 20 minutes before i got there. (damn traffic jams)

So the dilema remains....The R5-24 is THE bass. The only reason i did not pull the trigger on it is not a matter of money...i have the money... but the simple fact of justification. Right now i cannot justify owning such a nice bass without being involved in a project that is out doing anything. I recently quit my modern hard rock cover band over musical differences and my tool/apc tribute band has stalled due to a lack of a drummer. I NEED A BAND SO I CAN BUY MY SADOWSKY!!!

P.S. I want to stress one more time how cool Glen was Bass Specialties. And Glen if you are reading this....just know that you WILL be getting my business when i pull the trigger. That m5-24 in '59 burst will be mine if i do not buy the trans blue one before then.

Sorry for the novel everyone...but DAMMIT...you sadowsky owners finally got to me enough to make me go try one...and now...i dont even want to think about playing anything else.

I wouldn't let the fact that you're not in a band keep you from buying THE bass for you. I only play in my church's worship band, which means no money. That didn't stop me from recently acquiring a Warwick Dolphin Pro I 5-string (THE bass for me!) and it plays like a dream. Haven't regretted my decision for a second. Go for it!!:hyper:

I know the feeling your talking about all too well, my first trip to Bass Specialties turned into a Lakland 44-02. That store has the coolest vibe for us low enders, you can talk shop with bass players for hours. Glen has even stayed late if a good conversation or jam session broke out. and if you buy from him, he will go out of his way to make sure the sale is right, period.I say it all the time, but if your close to the area, GO ALREADY!!!
If your sure that the Sadowsky is the bass for you, and you have the means to buy it, I think that's all you need. correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you plan on being a bass player for a while, so there should be no reason NOT to get the bass. Your gonna find a band, maybe even two or three when your bring that R5-24 to auditions with you, don't let a lack of a band right now put doubt in your mind.
some of us spend thousands of dollars and years of time looking for the perfect bass and never find it, sounds to me like you've found yours, why deny yourself??
Do I even need to bring up the resale value IF you find your NEXT perfect bass???
pull the trigger, you'll be thanking yourself for years to come....

now to the most important part of your post...
your girl waited patiently for 2 hours while you dealt with your gas pains? my friend, THAT is the REAL find in all of this lolol

Congrats! And I'll second madmark5 - a woman who understands Bass GAS is a keeper!! I should know; she cleared the way for me to get my custom Warwick Dolphin. :hyper: Treat her right and life will be great!!

I know this feeling all too well. It is exactly how I felt after leaving Bass Central without initally buying my Sadowsky about two months ago.

Here is the thread I posted about that experience:

Yup, I remember thinking that very same thing: "this Sadowsky practically plays itself". Funny thing is I was also playing a Lakland while waiting for the sales guy to get the Sadowsky out of the back room. Not too bad but I forgot about the Lakland pretty quick after getting that Sadowsky in my hands.

So the dilema remains....The R5-24 is THE bass. The only reason i did not pull the trigger on it is not a matter of money...i have the money... but the simple fact of justification.

This is like deja-vu! I also had the money but in the back of my mind I kept trying to reason with myself thinking that I already have five basses. I needed another one like a hole in the head.

Right now i cannot justify owning such a nice bass without being involved in a project that is out doing anything.

This I don't understand. It sounds like your means of justification is different than mine was. My issue was how many basses I already had. You sound convinced that you don't deserve a high quality bass because you are not playing in a band and that's just crazy to me. I mean, you DO plan to eventually be in a band don't you? You need to go get that bass!! For one, it will probably inspire you to practice more and secondly, you need to be prepared when you finally get a band going.

Sorry for the novel everyone...but DAMMIT...you sadowsky owners finally got to me enough to make me go try one...and now...i dont even want to think about playing anything else.

Well I feel sorry for you already about the next few days you are going to have just thinking about it. Good luck sleeping. I lasted a week before I couldn't take it anymore and made the 90 minute drive back to Bass Central to buy it. I had to, it was calling for me. I just started a new job at the time and couldn't focus on my work because of visions of that Sadowsky Metro in my head.

If your history reflects low will power when it comes to buying the bass gear you want, save yourself from the torture of just thinking about it and make it a reality. You only get one short life so you might as well try and make the most of it. At least that was my main justification for buying my Sadowsky. If money isn't an issue, then I give you a week before your back here posting about your new Sadowsky.;)

Go buy the bass. Your reasoning should not hinge on anyone else but yourself. I know EXACTLY what you mean when you describe the Sadowsky 24-5. I've practically sold off every other bass I own because I know I won't find a better player. Do it or be kicking yourself for the rest of your bass playing life.

Eh, I'm sort of ambivalent about it. I fully understand the money thing. It doesn't make sense to me to spend that much money on a bass, gigs or not. I can afford it, but I've got better things to spend money on. Whether I bring my most expensive bass or my cheapest, I make the same money. However, if it means that much to you to own it and you won't be homeless over it, then buy it. Life is too short, and it sucks bad enough without pining for a bass you love but can't buy. Fortunately for me, my tastes transcend price.

1st visit to Bass Specialties today and OMG

1. Glenn is awesome
2. The guys that were in there playing were awesome and willing to switch over to cabs I am interested in
3. The gear - need I say more

The only problem I drive by it every day on my way home from work - and am not sure how I won't end up stopping every night just to check in.

I know I'm not the first or last person to say this, but the place just has that "vibe" for us low enders. when you enter that store, It doesn't matter how good you are, or what you play, people are always willing to share knowledge. everytime I leave that store I'm a better bass player and musician....
whether your buying a $2,000 sadowsky or a $20 set of strings, you get the same service, period. I sleep better at night supporting a place like that rather than getting blank looks at GC or ash....

honestly, Glenn has created something special over there...

My GAS was satisfied today. I visited Bass specialties today - thanks again Glenn - and cleared my GAS needs by picking up a new bass, a new head and a new cab.

Thankfully the husband sees this as a "group" purchase as he will benefit from it by being in the band.:D
