Just wondering.
I dig the trapdoors/rests on the downbeat of m.1 of the bassline and melody, esp. .

Maybe it's subdivided 8 + 6, (4 + 4 + 4 + 2) see #2 below. (#1 below is 7 + 7 - not sure if I like the way that appears when written.)

I vote for door number two. Jack DeJohnette is playing backbeats. Occam's razor says 4/4 | 2/4

I feel it and play it in three 4/4's and one 2/4, just like your #2 example above (a drummer friend and I used to warm up for shows with this little groove, great album!).

Hi Lionel,
If you tap 1/4 notes throughout the ostinato figure, you should tap a total of "14" taps before the line repeats. (FYI - I don't hear your last measure of "3/8".)

I feel it shorter than 2/4 that's it.

I say I feel but I do know it is not the right feeling, that means I don't feel it, I was just sharing I couldn't feel it not I was right.

Funny story from John Abercrombie about this tune: he told me Dave Holland brought the tune in, and that he and Jack "had no shaging idea" how to play this time signature. So, according to John, he and Jack spent 8 hours practicing the tune together before they recorded it. It was amazing to hear one of my idols describing himself and another of my heroes actually struggling with something. RIP John.
