Gear Snobs

I know I've got issues. But when I play a Fender amp it sounds like a Carvin. Whenever I play a Ampeg I tend to sound like.... A Eden. And whenever I start pumpin on a Alembic pre I get that screamin Superbass sound.

Haha. But hey.... I've got all the books.... So it's not my playin......

I know I'm going to take crap for this but this thread is pissing me off

I've been reading things like "don't deserve" or belittle someone by "playing circles around them" and that is complete BS take a good hard look at yourself.

only thing that matters is they are playing, creating something or bringing some enjoyment to themselves or someone else if they are doing that I couldn't give two squirts of piss if they are playing a million dollar bass

having a beat up instrument doesn't not make better than anyone. if you believe the I must have beat up gear and be a starving musician to be worthy crap then I think you've watched crossroads one too many times ... maybe your a closet Ralph Macchio fan and good for you if you are.

I have an expensive bass .... does that make me an instant a**hole, apparently so

I have my bass because I saved and work hard in my day job and sacrificed other things like going to the pub for a beer. I didn't spend my time pissing and moaning about what other people do and don't have.

Parked next to the bass is my $100 guitar I bought from the pawnbrokers ... having expensive or cheap gear doesn't mean jack sh**

let the abuse begin :D

That's mostly what I was getting at but nicer and in a different way.

No abuse from me, I just don't think you paid very good attention to what is actually being said in this thread. Most people seem to agree that having great gear does not make you a gear snob, but criticizing other players gear from a mostly financial/visual perspective does. I have nice gear that I have worked hard and done my research for, I got most of it cheap but it is still great gear. I would never belittle another player for not having good stuff, I just intend to be happy with my own stuff.

Peace, Martin.

But what if that person could smoke your ass with his badass playing?
As long as it wasn't with their bad ass-playing, I'd be OK with that...

i suppose that i have more bass amps and basses than most, but i don't consider myself a snob at all about them. i'm an open book about my gear, and whenever someone comes to my house, i invite them to play any amp or bass that i have. i'm just happy to talk with people that have the same interests. i never judge someone by their equipment, (entry level, mid or high dollar). for 40 years i have serviced just about every model and brand, and maybe because i've done that, and do have quite a bit of gear myself, i can't even remember the last time i ran into a 'gear snob'.

to me, seeing a 16 year old with an expensive bass or rig doesn't mean he or she's a snob about it. sometimes it's just the jealous onlooker accusing them of being one (which is even more silly).

IMO, basses are just wire and wood, and amps are just boxes with electronics in them. it's the person that's playing them that gives them life (nut behind the wheel).

If I couldn’t help but find myself wondering about someone else’s gear, I would likely go to “appropriateness” over high/low end…

An SX in a strictly-pro situation, I would have to assume the guy knew what he was doing, but a Fodera in a small bar... kinda like being over-dressed for an occasion, I might find it a bit tacky.

:)

I have to admit to being a full time professional gear snob,
its what I do!, I listen to their hard earned, cherished instruments and amplification and steadily replace bits of it. usually with the not behringer version, also I steal their power supplies and make them put batteries in all their pedals then stick snobby vintage ribbon and neumann mics in front of what's left of it into neve snobby state and such gear snobbery hights as rca tube pre-amps.
then i criticize the blokes playing in every minute detail until
the producer turns up and continues with all the hyper critical stuff about muting and note length etc while I sneakily arrange a triggered gate from the kick drum, to brutally chop off the beginning and end of most of his notes.
Yeah I'm a despicable utter gear snob for a living mate!.
I even make guitards unplug the couple of dozen or so pedals, they actually wont be using in this song, now that really upsets them!.
:D

The problem with snobbishness is that frequently those complaining about it are also snobbish in a different way. I understand that it would be frustrating being around somebody with a lot of stuff/gear and little or no chops. Yet sometimes, people with not so much gear whether they have skill or not look down on those who aren't as experienced. Unless I am mistaken, we all started as a beginner, even Stanley Clarke and Mark King, et al.

Nice guitars/equipment make it easier to learn and seem to provide incentive to play and improve. I do think it is foolish to believe that succumbing ot GAS in the hopes of buying your tone or skill. On the other hand, if a beginner can sense the difference in the quality of a gear item then let them have it.

When I see a badass player with better chops than me, I think WOW that guy must practice a lot more than me. cool!

When I see an expensive rig on stage I think WOW that guy has a lot more money to spend than me. cool!

and When someone comes up to me and starts telling me about what gear I should/should not use or implying that I suck because I don't think the same as him... I think WOW this guy is a LOT dumber than me. cool!

I don't really care what other people play, I only care what I play.

I've also had people turn down the option to use my bass amp and cabs for a variety of reasons, my Peavey power amp is too low brow, my Kern must be junk because they've never heard of it...and those speakers...well...they don't have a brand name or a configuration they recognize.

...usually after the show the come back and say 'next time I think I'll try your rig...'
