Geddy Lee Pickups

Yes I have played it and thought it was a far cry from Acoustic Corporation of the past. They didn't really have any power to speak of as I felt Acoustic should have done better than that offering to the public. Like I said it doesn't take much to be loud but power is a different story! You need power to reproduce the lower frequencies that bass amps put out and there is no way around that. When you use two 8 ohm cabs to get the full amount out of a 200W head you are not using the speakers to their fullest potential, not even close! I probably does sound good in a small room but once you get outside you will see what I'm talking about.

I've played one outside. With a pretty loud group, without a PA. Kept up fine.

And believe you me, I know clean headroom when I hear it. ;) And this thing had plenty of it.

Those were the old Acoustic amps. Most bass amps back then were only 200W's Another thing to consider is the different type of electronics back in those days, Guitar players used 50-100W's then every thing used less power back then. Most amps used tubes and tubes sound louder than SS amps though a watt is a watt! Today's 200W does not sound as loud as 200W's 40 years ago! And you must remember when you saw those Acoustic amps more than likely they were using more than one!

Most guitarists playing through tube amps (which is almost all of em) still use about that much power. And those vintage Acoustic amps were solid state. They were just conservatively rated in terms of power, just like these new ones, so they sound louder than their rating.

Nothing takes power quite like clean headroom, and like I said, this thing had plenty of it. Really not trying to argue, its all good :) Just wanted to share my experience. Besides, we likely have two different ideas of loud. I'm young, but I have old ears :hmm:

This thread has gotten a bit sidetracked. No arguing that headroom and loudness are two different issues; that has been beat to death around here. I am not sure I buy that this amp would be the source of his tone issues. It could just be an issue of what the OP expected to get from the GL pickups and what they could realistically deliver. Geddy's sound is much much more than those pickups.

The reason I mentioned his amp is because I own a Geddy jazz and it does have a lower output. If you don't have the volume at your head to compensate lower output at the bass don't blame the bass! Lot's of cheaper basses have "loud" pups, just because they are louder than a Geddy don't make the Geddy the problem. If you read the post by afireinside he say's the pups were "thin" and "limp" but he's judging that by playing with 200W's
