Geddy Lee Questions & History?

Man...I've been a Rush fan since I was about 12 (39 now) and I was listening to Exit Stage Left while walking my dog the other night. I've heard that album a thousand times and it always just sounds so good. Geddy is really amazing to not only play exceptional lines, but sing and play keyboards...a true multi-tasker.

Oh, of course you are totally right! I was thinking of the most recent (at the time) recordings. The third CD was a (terrific) bonus.
That recording was made on the 19th or 20th Feb 1978 at Hammersmith Odeon in London. I saw them on Feb 12th at Birmingham Odeon, which was the first gig on the UK leg of the tour. So hearing the CD really took me back.

Set list:
Bastille Day
Lakeside Park
By-Tor And The Snow Dog
Xanadu
A Farewell To Kings
Something For Nothing
Cygnus X-1
Anthem
Closer To The Heart
2112 (excludes "Oracle: The Dream")
Working Man
Fly By Night
In The Mood
Drum Solo
Encore: Cinderella Man

LOL, you may have have nailed me there. Slap! Reminds me of the Sonic burger commercials. That does look like the funky red jacket Alex wore in the Exit Stage Left video (MP tour). I guess I shouldn't have said "didn't even use".
Anyways, Geddy was still using majority Rick through Moving Pictures and he uses all Rick on the Exit Stage Left live video from that tour.

Remember that "Exit Stage Left" DVD doesn't include the whole gig.
I recall reading that he used the Jazz live for "YYZ" (which isn't properly featured on the DVD).

Yep. Not sure he ever recorded it with, but on those tours I remember the Steinberger with no headstock... with the mullet in a pony tail, the introduction of his now trademark John Lennnon glasses, the sport coat with the sleeves rolled, and the tennis shoes. Some this stuff I'd think I'd rather forget :)

Oh, the Eighties... the decade that time should have forgotten.... :D

About his backline on T4E, he played Ampegs for counterparts and also T4E and his solo album, My Favorite Headache, which has some really sick bass tones in my opinion. The tone on T4E is what I thought was the way a jazz bass through a SVT should sound. He only started using the Trace Elliot on Vapor Trails which Rush in Rio has a really sick bass tone also. And more fuel the fire.....

I think New World Man was with the Jazz Bass......

What bass rig did he go to during the GUP to RTB

I must respectfully disagree...He used the Trace Elliots on the T4E tour. By the time the Vapor Trails tour happened he did not use a backline at all, instead opting to go direct, hence the need to fill up the stage area with (at that time) clothes dryers, and later on Rotisserie machines for the S&A tour.

I think PW was exclusively 4 and 5 string Wal's

he didn't use the 5 string until hold your fire (specifically, lock and key, iirc - there's low b on that song, not sure if any others) - he used the producer's (peter collins) wal 4 string to record power windows, and didn't get his black one until the album was produced.

he used the 'berger on all of gup, and that was it as far as albums go w/berger, although he used it on tour from signals up to hold your fire, iirc. i think i remember on the tour for hold your fire seeing him finally use the wal live, and i think, iirc (been a while) he used the wal entirely on presto and roll the bones.

don't remember ever seeing him play his 5 string wal live, but that doesn't mean anything heh - he might have. i've seen em at least 3 times for every tour since moving pictures, so it sorta bleeds together. heh.

by t4e he was doing the wacky stage stuff - had a fridge up on stage.

the trace stuff started with counterparts on, and i think he's still using it behind the scenes, along with the sansamp rpm (used to use the rbi).

For what it's worth...

wiki is wrong on there in one respect - geddy didn't use the berger at all on power windows. there was a guitar player interview with him when it came out and he clearly stated that he used peter collins' wal on the whole album. the 'berger was too dark, in his words, for the sound they were going for.

I always loved how Geddy sounds like GEDDY regardless of gear. It's a great testament to technique and style. I always go back to PERMANENT WAVES and remember seeing him with the Jazz and being shocked. He made me get a RIC and he reinforced my decision to go back to my FENDER styles.

No. The Trace Elliot was a lot earlier (90's?).
He used SansAmp RBI (and clothes driers) for Vapor Trails tour.

He was using the Fender live for the Presto tour...I remember being really far back from the stage, but still being able to make out the blocks on the fingerboard and the white pickguard. :)
