This is absolutley correct save for the two tunes on Signals (DM and TW) that he used the Jazz on.

Over the years I have had a slight suspicion that "Entre Nous" may be the Jazz, but I still cannot tell...as far as "The Spirit of Radio" goes, I still firmly believe that is the Ric....now, on Moving Pictures, well that is another story...I myself have said in the past that I too believe that the Ric was definitely used on "Red Barchetta" and "The Camera Eye" and the Jazz was definitely used on "Tom Sawyer", "YYZ" and probably "Limelight"....but "Witch Hunt" and "Vital Signs" play tricks on my ears...sometimes these tunes sound like Jazz and sometimes like Ric...since the bass sound on the whole album was very overdriven, I think that is what makes it hard to decipher which bass was used on a few songs.

Yes, even if you hear the isolated bass tracks from Moving Pictures, its still hard to tell the Ric and Jazz apart! There is only a slight difference. Heck, I heard some isolated live songs of theirs and on Red Barchetta, I thought it was the Jazz he was playing, and it turned out to be the Wal! On recordings the Wal sounds completely different though. And, as much as he gets flak for it, I really liked the tone he got live with the Steinberger. Watch the G/P tour on youtube...I like that better than his live tone these days.

And, if you listen to the Jazz these days compared to back then, it sounds completely different. I much prefer the tone he got back on Moving Pictures. It sounds like a tube amp overdrive and these days its so Sansamp (to my ears anyway)

Agreed on the Steinberger tone...I used to hate it, but I agree live it sounds better than the Wal.

Honestly- if Different stages is Jazz or Wal then I think its his best live tone, imo. I believe most of it is Jazz but Im not sure...

What I am sure of is that he is more 'ratty' sounding (his words) than ever. While I understand his logic behind this (that it knits the band together better), I think for DS it was less so (overdriven). Check out his 'Driven' solo... not so ratty but tight! I am guessing- as mentioned- that his current Sansamp use is the main reason. I am a big Sansamp user myself- just easy on the drive :D

I really like Snakes & Arrows and both that and the R30 live records- but my point is that although Geddy may like that 'ratty' overdriven sound- he should give himself a little more credit for his more pure bass tone because it really sounds great to me... let Alex worry about the rattiness :p

+100 on the DS album live tone...he was still using a backline then (Trace Elliot I believe) so that may have contributed to the tone....I really dig the sound of his bass on "Show Don't Tell from that live CD...been chasing that for years...close, but...well you know how the saying goes.

Yes- that tone is so good, but I really think its as much w/ his technique- and a good tone (bass/strings/amp) certainly helps. Geddy really digs in w/ his right index finger ala Jamerson- it just seems to lend itself to a real command over his technique I think.

"Different Stages" was recorded during the "Test For Echo" tour. At that time, Geddy had already ditched the Wals. And I agree: His tone is simply amazing on that record and I also think that his backline had something to do with that.

You're all turned around.
Permanent Waves was the album before Moving Pictures.
Permanent Waves is all Rick.
Moving Pictures is mostly Rick with some Jazz.
Geddy didn't even use the Jazz live on the Moving Pictures tour.
Get the Exit Stage Left (live) DVD from Best Buy. That was the Moving Pictures tour and it's ALL RICK.
