he is gettng a lot more control over how his bass sounds.

I've read where he said he just liked the "directness" of the sound coming through in-ear monitors, rather than hearing his sound from a stage rig a few yards away.

He's gaining a nice in-ear mix using an isolating headset and losing all the bulk, maintenance, and expense of the rest of the equipment.

I would love nothing more than to be able to sell off all of my amps and cabs in favor of a really nice DI, and take it and my bass to all of my gigs. But, like the vast majority of bass players, and unlike Geddy Lee, I have no control over the PA I get to use from gig to gig, and indeed whether I have a PA or not.

So, the moral of the story is - if you are confident that your PA support, monitors, etc. can adequately handle the bass, and where you have the ability to create a nice in-ear mix, and someone who knows your book well enough to provide that mix night after night, going direct with no amps is a great option. Let's all hope we get there someday.

I'm sure Geddy can ensure that, while we can't. That's why it's hard for a lot of people to believe that he doesn't use an amp onstage. And yup, let's hope we can achieve that someday.

I love Geddy's tone. It seems like he has been doing alot of interviews lately. I cant wait to see him and the band on Friday the 15th

The clothes dryers are only part of the sound! He has that massive outboard effects vending machine to tweak the tone as well! hahahahaha

Actually, Geddy's sound is (and always has been) fabulous! The guy is a wonderful bass player.

I had this for a couple months. It was the best. I used an Avalon U5, a BDDI, Shure IEM's and a 2 channel EQ. I took a monitor send to one channel with the band mix, and my bass to the other. I EQ'ed/leveled them separately and sent that to my IEM's. No ringing ears, heard everything I wanted - or didn't want - to hear and had my bass and a light rack for load in/out.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat, but you have to have the same set up every night.

That's what I was wondering, but I think it might just be an illusion, or maybe those new drivers designed to look like dryer windows.

They do sound good, but would be nice if they had them in different colors.

By the way, his tone on Rush in Rio isn't representative of his live tone. It sounds very very bright and abrasive on the DVD, which is likely a product of his DI-ing. But live, his tone is very bassy yet well defined. It's pretty good.
