I had a pair of Hammer pants, but I got mine in Turkey and they were traditional clothing. I didn't wear them out much.

I both agree and disagree!! It was very crisp and clear, and it was very easy to pick out in the mix. And being such, it really showed off the progression of his playing into incredible speed and staccato precision...when he wasn't noodling around on those darn keyboards they were so enamored with during that time. And as a Superwound user myself from that era, all of those were points I strove for at the time.

However...now that I'm older and look back I find the tone far to nasal and lacking in width, or "oomph." Yes the rusty chainsaw is a bit much these days but I still think his peak tone was in the arc from Hemispheres to Signals.

I think perhaps also the Wal really suited the type of music Rush was doing at that time. Maybe the Wal wouldn't sound right on The Trees or Circumstances

I agree - it was a fit for that moment in time. And I'm still kicking myself for not getting a Wal back in the very early 90s when they were "reasonably" priced.

IIRC, the Rotos now have no silk on them.

Their "Roto" series of strings have no silks; I suppose he may have had a set of them on an instrument.

that's not true. they now have silk only on the headstock side; on the (coloured) balls there's no silk now. mine have red silk on the headstock, but on TB I red about black silk, so I don't know what to think.

The last set I got had no silk at the ball ends and red silk on the tuner end. That was in the summer. I have a set on order with BSO, curious to see if they changed them again.

Interesting. Maybe Rotosound is changing its silk-o-fication. As said above, the less expensive Roto line of strings ( they're regular 66s) have no silks.

Rotosound changed about 2 years ago. No more silks and colored ball ends now.

What I noticed from the Rotosound Funkmaster set (just bought a set) is that they are cheaper then I remember them to be (a few years back). I used to buy Rotosound swingbass strings (0.030, 0.050, 0.065, 0.085) and they costed always around €35,-. Now the Funkmaster set which is basically the same as the Swingbass strings (with a thicker A and E) they are only €24,-. Big difference in price for the same strings!

yes, but bass strings, still have the silk at the headstock I have them, and we talked about it in different topics. however, a guy in a topic stated that they now have black silk, but me and a friend of mine both have sets with the red silk, coloured balls and no silk at the ball end (foil packets).

Ahhh the 80's

I used to have that ad on my wall when I was a kid. Those were great strings. But back then I think they were around $40 a set? Thank you for the memories!
