May have had a shorter version of that in the 80s...back when I had hair.
Now, at this point I would say "Man, his tone really went downhill with those strings, especially when he went to his Wal from the Steinberger" but I don't want the Wal people to throw stuff at me.

I'll never admit I had that style or had a hairdresser for a girlfriend...that wanted it to look that way...all the time. Or ever had sticky crap on it that turned out to be combustible. Or had to defend myself in a redneck bar over a friggin' haircut - (Billy Ray hadn't happened yet). Nope!! Not me.

Recently I saw a lifestyle magazine with Geddy on the cover. He was holding a bass with no silks at the tuning machines; surprising considering he's a Rotosound man.
Best tone Geddy ever had was from his Wal! So crisp and clear, it really stood out and fit in the mix so well. I hate his 'rusty chainsaw' tone he's had since Counterparts, although I think it was much better on R40 with his different basses.
I both agree and disagree!! It was very crisp and clear, and it was very easy to pick out in the mix. And being such, it really showed off the progression of his playing into incredible speed and staccato precision...when he wasn't noodling around on those darn keyboards they were so enamored with during that time. And as a Superwound user myself from that era, all of those were points I strove for at the time.
However...now that I'm older and look back I find the tone far to nasal and lacking in width, or "oomph." Yes the rusty chainsaw is a bit much these days but I still think his peak tone was in the arc from Hemispheres to Signals.

that's not true. they now have silk only on the headstock side; on the (coloured) balls there's no silk now. mine have red silk on the headstock, but on TB I red about black silk, so I don't know what to think.
Not a bad idea - folks in my neighborhood might get it. This year was Conspiracy Theorists again (with my oldest son) complete with tinfoil hats - a couple of years ago I was Jack Skellington. The makeup for that was pretty easy considering the starting point....
I like the conspiracy theorists idea. Sounds like you guys have a solid tradition going.
Yep - the adults always bust out laughing when they see it. Most kids don't get it, but a few do.
