Okay TB, when i have no idea what to do and have spare cash laying around i ask you wise bassists what i should get?

A geddy lee jazz bass with a black pickguard on it
or
jaguar with a possible BAII or Gotoh addition.

As far as price goes, i would be buying a new Jag vs a used Geddy. From my research so far, the Jaguar would cost me $600 (w/o the bridge) and the Geddy could cost me somewhere around $800.

What say you?

actually if you use the MF call-in code OCT20%, you'll get 20% off the $600 Jaguar. I ordered mine for $480 already.

now youre talking nearly half the price of a used geddy.

If you put a Badass bridge on the Jag it will sound even more tinny than what it already does...the active circuitry needs to be ditched and CTS pots installed with a paper in oil capacitor - basically like an old Jazz Bass has, and it will sound awesome - the Jags are real nice players with great necks(and look 1000 times sexier than those Geddys), but the active stuff lets em down...I sold mine before I realised I coulda modded it to be more fat-sounding like the old Jazz Basses...it's so easy to do (as long as you know how to swing a soldering iron), super cheap , and if MF are having a 20% markdown on em, I'm calling my buddy in Ohio to get me one!(living in Australia we miss out on all the good deals) For less than 50 bucks in pots and a PIO cap you can have a Jag smokin like an old school Jazz with the extra tonal options from the top controls, as the pickups are stock US Fender Jazz anyway...the lame poly film capacitors that go in most Japanese Fenders don't do much for the tone, and I suspect the pots may not be 250K which you need in a P or J to get the proper vintage growl....
Now, to call up Ohio...

The Jag is gonna give you more versatility in your tone and for a cheaper price, to me it's a no brainer. JAG all the way!

* The active preamp IS noisy and CAN be alleviated with some better sheilding, but I think that this bass is a great sounding passive bass in and of itself. The active is just another topping to an already delicious cake. ;)

out of the jag and the geddy, i'd go jag. simply because i hate the geddy lee neck.

+1

That shaved neck profile is a little too slim for me. Otherwise, beautiful bass, best of the 70s.

I just bought a Jag at 20% off from MF. $479.00 is just a crazy low price for something that has a unique look, feels like a Jazz, but has some extra bells and whistles.

I grind like hell on my Jag.

Don't do any mods to it until you gig it at least once.

Don't worry about swapping pre-amps, bridge, nut, capacitors, knobs, pickups, etc. You get the idea. Half of it won't make a difference.

Buy it and shield it with a bit of copper tape.

Mine is almost completely stock except for the black pickguard. I am very picky about my tone and I'm completely happy with the Jag. It's a versatile player's bass that's the same any USA bass I've played. It has a great deep, crunchy rock sound with all the switches on. My band won't let me use any other bass!

Hope that helps.

The badass does very little for tone. I have both stock and badass bridges. It won't make it sound "Tinny". The Jaguar doesn't sound "Tinny" at all in the first place.
