When I worked as an ad assistant (Read: glorified intern) for one of the Guitar Magazines based here in NYC, I heard lots of stories about Gene and Co., and it was a mixed bag. Guess it depends which day you catch him?
I met him once at a meet and greet - seemed pretty nice. But yeah, I can see why others have had problems with him...he always comes off as extremely pretentious. If you're in the mood for a good read on the inner workings of his personality, Kiss INC. and the music business in general, pick up the book Kiss and Sell, which was written by their former business manager.
I also heard the story about the single 8x10, although I don't know if he used that set up for long.

well from hands on my 2 eyes seen it experience , thats what was the deal on the 2000 tour . 2 real cabs the rest fake , fake heads on stage , real amps controlled by the tech off stage ..... i would like for others to chime in who have had the chance to work for them like i did ... we can compare notes ..... the rest is left to what someone else thinks ....
Well 3 pages in and there have been maybe 3 HELPFUL posts that were on topic. The rest have been GENE is an ASS/ARROGANT/STUPID/DOUCHE/UNTALENTED.
Who ELSE could cause such an uproar.
Gene is talented. Is he Jaco...no. Is he Sid Vicious no. He plays well within the framework of the music and writes good, memorable bass lines.
What's wrong with being good in business. You cry babies sound like the twits who come to my gigs and stand in the back, arms folded, scowling and critiquing. if you were any good YOU'd be too busy gigging to worry about it.
PS. The PUNISHER is a GOOD bass. At least MINE is.....then again I have enough sense to get a professional setup done when I buy a bass from SPENCER's!?!?

I have dug what KISS was about from the beginning: Playing music people would enjoy, putting on a world-class show, and making money while they're at it. I don't see success anywhere near that level from the bashers here.

exactly ! about the gear . i think gene is a great rock band bassist . he has played some really cool lines that made the song . the axe basses have always been good quality . in my opinion , the kramers were better . i have seen several bc's that i thought were sub par . the bolt on punishers from bc were really a joke as far as quality . the newer spencers punishers were good quality basses , but i have noticed that the quality varies greatly in the build and finish . one that i owned you could see all of the laminated lines in the neck and body joint . it is black and hard to cover , but that one was sloppy . i have to admit it reminded me of schecter overseas build and quality .... im ready for another release of these basses . i had been told it was gonna be with silvertone . washburn couldnt make it cheap enough , neither could spector . from what i was told , gene was looking to sell the bass for 500-600 bucks for the bolt on version and then a neck through for right under a grand . maybe it will happen soon ... winter NAMM maybe ???? the guy from hembry custom guitars has made several really cool copies . he does good work and not stupid high .....

What does where I play have to do with who's backing Gene during a live show? Either way, I'd be happy to compare music resumes with you at any time. I don't feel the need to flaunt my accomplishments but don't mind sharing at all.
I'm a huge Kiss fan and have been for 32 years. I'm not offended at all by them having someone backing them up. It's no secret really. Even Peter had backing when he was in the band.
Don't get me wrong - I don't doubt your account at all. I'm just reiterating what one of the staff writers at the magazine was told by the tech at the time of the interview. The One-speaker-trick may have been experimentation on the part of the tech for that show only.
So many people come in to these type threads and either act like they know it all, or just bash whoever it's about. I've noticed that many of those folks have no real world experience behind what they say. I think people generally use the word "Troll" as a descriptor.

Really? I've heard lots of rumors over the years, but nothing about other musicians playing their parts behind the curtain. I find that hard to believe simply because that seems too impractical to pull off well.

if someone has an interview or pics of something other than what i have seen being used i would like to see and read it . if it didnt come from gene or spherro (cant spell his name) then its still no better than what we are doin right now ......
