General bass effects help

Just joined, and I have never used any bass effects in over 30 years of playing. I recently joined an 80s cover band, did some research (mainly on here), and bought a Boss ME50B to try and be a good bandmate and have the right sounds. We're playing Duran Duran, Cure, Scandal, Missing Persons, INXS, Men at Work, all the usual stuff. I would really appreciate where to start with effects. I'm making an assumption that less is more, and that I need to be on the conservative end of adding effects. So far, I'm playing around with mid-shape, and chorus and reverb. I just want to know what effects to start out playing around with and if there are parameters that I should be aware of to stay away from. I'm at square one and will really appreciate any guidance. thanks!

I think it's just trial and error. The best thing you can do is google the songs you're playing and focus on the effects those specific musicians used. You'll find sounds you like and sounds you don't. But it'll give you the foundation.

I am not a big effects user either and think the place to start is the bass player's page for the band you're trying emulate. They often have info on gear and effects they use and sometimes the songs/albums they use/used them on.

I would suspect that a search in this effects forum using the name of the song /band/bass player might also turn up some useful info. I frequently see discussions about effects and related settings used on specific songs. I hope that helps.
