What is a generic bass? People seem have different preferences in what model they like so there is praise for a lot of basses. I would think some of those old cheap basses would be generic but then you have people praising they're unique tone. I can see generic for other products but not so much basses. Someone give me an example.

The people you see using the term are likely not using it properly.
M-W's definition:
a: relating to or characteristic of a whole group or class : GENERAL b : being or having a nonproprietary name <generic drugs> c : having no particularly distinctive quality or application <generic restaurants>
I'd think of this as being a 34" scale bass with four strings and a pickup. They all have that in common, at least the electric ones do.
If I were to expand that any further to include my personal OTTOMH idea of "generic", I'd say a passive P-Bass, starting (in quality) around Fender level and going down a step or two from there. Anything above that, I'd consider "higher-end" and anything well below that I'd consider "crap".

Fender Ps and Js are pretty much what I would consider generic. Not bad, mind you, it's just that most folks will picture one of the two when they think 'bass', and they're the most copied designs around.
People praise the Fenders so much and when people talk generic they usually mean it as a bad thing.
Yeah, that's pretty generic. And it's probably crap, too.
In that case, both terms apply, but they aren't interchangeable.
When I hear "generic bass" I think any low-budget P-bass or J bass copy (low budet not necessarily being bad)... you know... but maybe I am off bass (heh heh)... THe Fender's being the original...
