Cold Elephant-great playing on those recordings! Those strings have such a powerful sound, especially arco. There's still a bit of the gut brightness, but it's really full sounding and much more resonant than other bowed gut strings I've heard. I may have to fork up the extra cash for a set in the future...

Double Bass Genssler Strings

Cheers rxman28557. I've got a funny bridge without the usual heart shape cutout and without the usual wings either side - i had it made when I had the old adjustable one taken off about a year or so ago. The sound became a lot brighter after I had it installed, and in fact Gerold warned me that it might not be a suitable sound for orchestra combined with his strings, but I like a little bit of extra zing on this bass given the sound is quite broad naturally. You're right about the resonance, they're the best i've ever come across whilst still maintaining a good arco response. I think the lower tension just lets the bass breathe more.
What I will say to anyone thinking about these strings is that you get out what you put in - which could be viewed as both a positive and a negative consideration. The plus is that the volume and the quality of sound possible are fantastic, but they do need a bit more care in the right hand. I find them to be somewhat less forgiving than steel strings in that regard, but only minimally. Gerold says that these strings are designed for orchestra playing more than say, chamber or solo playing, for which he recommends the 2011 or DRAGO sets as they have a thinner gut core and therefore are presumably easier to manage in the upper register. I certainly wouldn't want to do a recital on these strings but for orchestral playing I honestly think nothing else even comes close.
