Genz Benz GBE 750 question

what else can you tell me about how you're running the amp:
eq'ing, levels etc.

Also, is the pass active or passive? If it is active, how are you eq'ing the bass?

Have you checked out the manual yet?

All the best,
Roger

okay...but where are the levels? Each channel has a gain and a volume....plus, there is the master volume.

All these things will affect the input o/l lights. If your master is way down too.

Especially though since all your tone controls are flat. These all act as gain stages so if they are flat, you'll have a hard time pinging the input.

Once again...have you checked out the manual?

I had the same question arise when i got mine, too (even PM'd Roger about it). All I can say is that you need to play with the controls a little more. But the SS O/L light does not come on with the same amount of gain as the tube channel, so setting them both at the exact levels will not get them both to light up. This is what I have found, anyway.

The tube channel has more gain to allow easier overloading, especially with a passive pickup.

With a passive pickup, especially with laid back playing styles, there is plenty of headroom available on the FET channel as this was not designed with overdriving in mind. The O/L LED looks at the signal after the gain stage and also after the EQ stage, so cutting the eq will reduce the signal level post eq.

Thanks (has"beenz")......LOL. I read through the manual a couple times. I was brief in my posts this afternoon because I was at work and CRAZY busy. It just seems that the tube pre-amp channel is a bit more sensitive than the ss pre-amp channel. I'm not much of a tech guy, I just play the bass. I bought the amp a couple weeks ago and I only spent about 15minutes playing with it. It does sound amazing. I only had the master up to 1 and it made my Aguilar 112 shake the walls. I think what I will do is just use it at practice tonight and go from there. Tomorrow night I'll use it at a show. I will follow up soon. Thanks for the info.

trust me the gbe750 is LOUD! i had the same issue initially but found i was setting the pre way hotter than necessary, making the master clip light come on a little earlier than typical. for my passive basses i typically set the pre gain as high as needed and the pre volume about 09:00 o'clock. i play mine through three epifani 112's at practice and we pratice extremely loud and when set as above, its never clipped the master. you just need to play with it a bit.

I used the amp at practice last night through my Aggie 112 and a GK 2X10. I didn't really think that it was very loud. I also think that it clips pretty easy. Help!

where are ALL your settings.....please express in o'clock format. Also, are all your blue lights on?....i.e. channel mixing, signal shaping etc..

Lastly...you said it clips pretty easy. Do you mean the light comes on or do you actually hear clipping?

SS gain around 3:00, SS volume around 12:00, Tube pre about the same. Signal shaping off, both pre channels on, all EQ settings flat.

The red clip/limit led light comes on quite easy.

that's an awful lot of gain....those gains are cranked. One channel by itself at 3:00 could start the liight going off. You have two gain stages going since you're mixing the channels.

I'd start by using one channel, bringing the gain down and the master up. You can also bring up your channel volume a bit.

Are you hearing clipping though or is the light just coming on?

On page 3 of the manual, which is also on-line, it describes a good place to start.

a couple of other things:
* tell me more about your speaker cabs?.....are they both 4 ohm cabs?
* what band setting are you playing in?....type of music ....how loud?
* where do you stand in relation to your cabs? Do you stand close to them....not hearing them, while the sound develops 20 feet away?

In the manual it says to turn up the gain until the light pops on with the hardest hit notes. With the SS pre set at 3:00 the light won't even turn red when I slap or pop a string. Above you say that the gains are cranked.........?
With the tube pre I have to set the gain at 3:00 to get any bite/overdrive.

I'm not hearing the amp clip I just see the clip-limit light pop on.

I played a show last night and it went better than it did at practice Friday night. I had my gains around 12:00 and the volumes 9:00 - 10:00. I did get a lot of compliments on my sound.

Last night I used a Aggie 112 and my Trace (English Made)
4X10. Both cabs are 8 ohms. I usually play venues that hold 100-300 people and the occasional outdoors show. Our shows are quite loud. We play everything form Stevie Wonder to Pearl Jam. I stand fairly close to my amp due to stage size.

Okay.....so you should have the switch on the back of your amp set to 4 ohms.

Standing close to your amp: that's fine, just be aware that people 20 feet away are getting more "loudness" then you are. On small stages, I often switch places with my guitarist.....we stand in front of eachother's amps.

okay...I'm afraid I'm lost:
* you said the lights come on easy.....but before you said they didn't come on at all.
* You also said it wasn't that loud which lead me to believe you thought it was clipping too early.

In the end, if you like the tone you are getting, don't worry about the lights. One reason though you have the channel gains up before the lights come on is because youre eq knobs are flat. The higher you have these, the lower the gains will need to be before the lights come on.

But again, I wouldn't worry about when the lights come on. MUCH of it comes down to the individual player's style too. Will Lee and Randy Jackson will clip on amp long before a guy that plays with a ramp (Richard Bona/Matt Garrison) will.......generally.
