Genz Benz Preamp settings

As per the topic - I run my Neo-Pak 3.5 flat into a Neo212.

As for the tangent - I am looking for a small, light cab to use with my 3.5. I was going to get a Neo112 but I guess I'll wait and see.

Please don't make me regret my Neo-Pak purchase....

the stuff we have coming out doesn't direclty replace what we catalog now.

I still gig with a GBE600 BTW. ...haven't replaced it with a 750 yet.

good enuf for me, GBE600. I dont know why I just posted it on CL for sale. I am looking for a newer bigger sound. I also posted 3 cabs for sale on CL. Mostly use Avatar B212 wB210 with the GBE. But I am wantint a GB Neox 212T to try out with the GBE600. If thats not good enough I'll sell that head and get the 750, but hope the cab makes it for me. Mainly I want a single 4 ohm 212 cab to get the 425 watts instead of having to use 2 8 ohm cabs. Dont know losing the 210 and going with a single 212 will cut it. Guess Im not really looking for a new sound but a good sound with less cabs but def a 212. Guess I better strike that GBE sale and order up a Neox 212T for starters. :hmm:

Hmm... That's another hint. I actually couldn't wait. Someone posted a 750 here for a great price and I had to get it. :bassist: I love it. I used Jason's gear on a show, but now that I've had time to really play with it, I like it even more. I forgot how good solid state could sound for slap!

I just picked up a GBE750 from another TB'er and I couldn't be happier so far. It is currently paired with an 8ohm Avatar 2x10 delta and the sound is MUCH bigger than with my previous setup.

I'm using the setting suggested by Roger in this thread and am pleased with the sound.

What is strange is that I've yet to make the channel OD light come on save for when playing slap style on the FET channel - I'll see it barely light up on the TUBE channel. :eyebrow:

Any recommendations for the channel volume and gain settings? I'm not able to get the OD light to come on, but I do get the occasional clip light when playing slap style only with BOTH channels engaged, the master set at 9 o'clock, gain set to 2 o'clock, and channel volume at 12 o'clock.

Not really strange to me. I've played a few passive basses through my 1200 and some of them fail to drive the tube channel as hard as others. I would like to see a little more gain available on the GBE's, but it's just a minor thing to me.

hmmm...our clip lights come on pretty darn early (meaning before you hear clipping).

What type of bass are you using and what are the settings on its eq if its active?

I have the GBE1200 and a Epifani UL410 Series 2 cab. I have recently found a EQ Setup that is working VERY well for what I want to hear. I have everything except the low mids and the highs boosted to about 1 o'clock. The highs are set to 12 o'clock, and I have the low mids set to about 10 o'clock. This is due to the inherent low-mid push of the Epi SII cab that I am using. I play a passive Lakland DJ4 bass through this setup with both pickup volume controls on full, and the tone control almost on full (the bass does need new strings, so this tone control may vary according to the 'zing' factor of the strings that I am using.
The one thing that I love about the Genz head is that it is sooooo useful in the EQ section, a little bit goes a long way. I could probably attain the sound of a bass with new strings (or almost) by using the High Frequency boost in the Global EQ shaping section.
I seriously love this amp. It is so clean and responsive to EQing.
I am guessing that you are not 100% happy with the sound that you are getting? In my experience within the last year and a half of trying to attain the sound that I am looking for (i.e. purchasing a lot of different equipment) is that EQing the amp to your specific cab is key. I have always heard that boosting the low-mids helps you cut through, and boosting the High mids adds some growl to your tone, so that is what I did with this (and every other) amp/cab setup, but I really was very unhappy with the sound that I was getting out of this Genz-Epi rig until I cut the Low-mid EQ, and played around with boosting other frequencies. I realized that I had to just forget all of the basic sound suggestions that I heard and followed, and started from scratch with the EQ set flat. Just take some time and play around with it. I also purchased a Gramma pad to isolate the sound, and that may have also helped in getting a great tone out of my rig.
At this point, I am pretty much GAS-free, but I definitely will try this rig on a few more gigs, since I have only had it out on one gig and that was in a room that I have never played before.

Great advice for everyone. I've got to try that setting on my GBE600 with my Schroeder neo cabs since they are very mid focused as well.

Both passive - Fender Highway-1 jazz and a Squier Vintage modified 70's jazz. Nothing on the effects loop and the bass is just plugged right into the head. The output limiter is engaged.

I hate to ask the obvious but, do you have the input set to passive? Also my settings that I've posted around are more for active basses. If you have a passive, a couple of more clicks of boost in the lows, low mids and mids should get things jumping.

There's no problem at all if you don't get the input clip LED to flash, as there's plenty of gain throughout the rest of the preamp. There's a few dB of headroom left after the input clip LED flashes, it shows you that you are getting close to overload. In fact, I think there's an additional 20dB of gain available, you don't have to (and shouldn't) clip the input to get full power and beyond.
