Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 problem

I have a Shuttle 9.0. Starting last night it started making a static noise with extreme distortion and feedback. I unplugged my bass but the noise continued. I tried a different bass but the problem remained . I powered it down, checked my speak-on connections and powered it back up. The noise went away and it played fine. This morning as I was practicing it sounded fine but then it did the same thing for a short time then it went away. All my connections were solid. I think the preamp tube might be loose. Is that something I can fix myself? I appreciate help with this. The nearest service center is 150 miles away.

As always, when you have an amp with a tube in it, that is usually the issue. Your problem sounds like either a bad tube, or a tube that needs to be reseated.

Unplug the amp, pull to tube out, and put it back in. If that doesn't solve the issue, most likely a new tube will.

Edit: The wonderful thing about Genz, is that if it actually is something that needs repairing, call Genz directly. Their service turnaround is amazing. They will just have you ship it to Arizona, and they will turn it around fast if anything is needed.

PS Give this thread an hour or so. Most likely, Andy (agedhorse), a Genz designer/engineer (and all around good guy!), will post exactly how to reseat or check the tube (or possibly other checks/fixes you can do on your own)

When I had this problem Jeff asked me to bypass the preamp by plugging my bass into the Effects Return. Noise gone. He then shipped me a new tube, much faster than sending the S9 to Arizona and back :)

Plugging my bass into the effects receive didn't work. The distortion remained. I should add that the problem persists even if my bass isn't plugged in. It's a loud static hiss and a distorted feedback-like noise when I play a note. Very intermittent. It happens occasionally but I can sometimes recreate the issue by tapping the top of the amp.

Try rotating the MASTER VOL.. to see it if is dirty...
And also the EFFECT LOOP may be dirty.. With the Amp OFF..Try running a 1/4" in and out of the FX SEND and RETURN a dozen or so times.. Then try powering up with your bass plugged into the normal front input and play.. see what happens.

OK, Andy gave me some instructions. It turned out to be a loose jumper situated right behind the master volume. I also reseated the tube while I was at it. Of course, time will tell if this is the final fix but the problem hasn't reoccurred. If the problem returns I'll know that GB's great CS has my back.

PM me, I will walk you through a couple of simple tests to see what the problem may be. The most common cause is a bad tube, but there are a couple of other things that can cause similar symptoms. It takes a couple minutes to troubleshoot.
