Genz Benz ShuttleMAX 9.0 Now A Reality

Nonsense, poopy-pants!! It's still on schedule. Don't know what the hell that exception was about, but it's in Fargo now and scheduled for delivery tomorrow.

All I have is a rehearsal this weekend, but I'll take it and probably my Eden 210 to give it a good run through.

To my ears, the primary difference I pick up with the Streamliner is some added "extension" to the low end. The texture is the same, but there is more heft and rumble to the notes. Also, the Roscoe and Uber combination helps them all growl nicely :)

Heck - if I'm gonna be wrong, ain't it great that it happens like this?!? :)

I know I saw an exception on yours, but it must have gotten back on track by the end of the day...

Heck, they cancelled school here today, and what little snow we had was gone by 10 AM or so... :rollno:

What I did was put a new bass line on the "Fine Little Mama" session that Danny (Rocket Music's co-owner) and I did a while back. Each pass through the verse's chord progression gets a different bass head (or a different setting on the same head). And I recorded both the mic'd signal and the direct signal, so we can listen for any differences in the DI's of the various heads. I'm not sure there are any design differences, but it was easy enough to capture... so I did!

Just FYI - all I did was overdub the bass line. I recorded the fretless lead bass that you hear quite a while ago on my fretless Roscoe. I believe that was recorded direct through my Alembic F1X preamp.

Here's the setup for the new bass lines:

The mic'd signal chain was:

My Roscoe Century Sig V -> head -> Genz-Benz UBER 410 -> MXL Genesis Large Diaphram Condenser mic

And here's what you'll be hearing:
Shuttle 9.0: Intro
Shuttle MAX 9.2 Tube: First sung verse
Shuttle MAX 9.2 FET: Second sung verse
Shuttle MAX 9.2 BOTH: First pass of dobro solo
Streamliner 900: Second pass of dobro solo, last verse & outro

And to give credit where credit is due:
Danny: dobro (rhythm and lead) & vocals
Me: bass (rhythm and lead) & drum programming

Here's the complete mix:
"Red Hot Mama" (Elmore James)

What you hear in the mix above is a combination of the mic'd & direct signals. It's mostly mic'd, the direct signal is roughly 6 dB lower.

And here are the various bass tracks:

Really appreciate you doing this!

I have some nice Sennheiser headphones -- I was amazed by the closeness of the Tube and FET channels on the 9.2 and the quality of the Genz DI which made the differences a bit more apparent on the Direct only clip.
I liked the blend of the two preamps the best (though on a gig I'd probably favor the FET a bit in setting the balance between the two for the cut-through factor).
The Streamliner does have a nice heft to the notes and I noticed in Ed F's video that using either of the two upper midrange settings with a bit of boost brings out some nice articulation that it seems to lose in the tube warmth which I think would work really well in the mix of a live venue.

And you think the Quad is more articulate than the Ub410?

I also do not hear an appreciable difference between the Shuttle 9.0 and the tube channel of the Max 9.2. As such, I wonder how the new 3PDM circuit of the Max 9.2 affects the tone which is supposed to result in "increased heft and girth of the individual notes, while maintaining the articulation and dynamics of the note."

I don't have time to sift through the whole Shuttle 9.0 thread. I am wondering if anyone has compared it to a Mesa M6 Carbine? I just did an A-B between M6 Carbine and my LMII and the M6 blew it out of the water in terms of presence, punch, clarity. The LMII suddenly sounded congested and like a passive tone control was rolled way down. (with no VLE or VPF in the mix)

So now I am rethinking my amp choice with the Mesa M6 being a front runner, except for one thing....I love the back-friendly Mirco amp factor. So the Shuttle 9.0 is quite appealing. Or Shuttle 9.2 or Streamliner. So many choices! It's a good time to be a bass player!
