Genz Benz Streamliner, Part 10

I use the same rig as you for live gigs: Pbass -> Streamliner 900 -> Berg HS210.
Set gain @ 10 o'clock, volume @ 2, bass 9, mid & treble @ 12 noon and master between 10 and 12 as needed. I think it sounds great. I think I've found the reason for my "crank-the-gain-to-get-loud" issue:
I've opened the amp and appearently the tubes mounted are not the originals:
There's an EH gold 5751 in V1 (which would explain the lower gain)
EH gold 12AX7 in both V2 and V3.
The tone is fine, how are those tubes quality wise compared to the stock? 5751's have 30% less gain than 12AX7.
Does the tube rolling in V1 also affect the DI output at pre-eq settings?

So I tried the bag made by Genz-Benz a while back and while it was OK I prefer clamshell type carry bags. I've carried my Eden WT-400 around for ten years in a Tuki clamshell bag without incident. I contacted Tuki but they refused to make me a similar bag to fit a Streamliner. So I contacted Studio Slips. Glad I did. They made me a bag to my exact specifications. It came today. Great fit, great quality, great look, and it took about two weeks from ordering on the phone to delivery. I've included two pics of my Eden bag for reference. Both bags came with a shoulder strap. For those who like their amp to ride sideways, the Studio Slips template is already done and available on their website. If you'd like the knobs to point up while being carried I'm sure they can easily modify as they have the necessary dimensions. :)

Normally a 5751 is swapped in because while it does reduce the gain it tightens up the bottom end too. A popular swap by many.

I've always run my Streamliner with the DI Post EQ. If you are running it Pre EQ I would think that whatever is up front in V1 shouldn't matter, however Agedhorse should chime in and give you a definitive answer.

I sent a PM few days ago to agedhorse: he confirmed that the tube mounted in V1 WILL AFFECT the output sent from the DI pre-eq.
Just a reminder for anyone putting a tube with lesser gain in place of the usual 12AX7.
With the 5751 I can get into Overdrive territory starting from 2 o'clock with gain button pushed. It makes the button much more usable since you aren't getting chainsaw distortions early.
Actually, even with the gain at full tilt it's an overdriven tone but not over the top.
I was just concerned if the DI output would be too low, BUT, haven't tested it properly yet and haven't heard any complain from folks in tube rolling thread.

My Streamliner 900 continues to amaze me. If you haven't had a chance to record direct from the Streamliner you are missing out. I had some recording sessions this week and was totally blown away by the DI on this thing.

This past saturday I a had a recording session where the owner of the studio just raved about his REDDI and "how fat and warm my bass would sound". I had never used the REDDI so I was gung ho to try it out. Long story short i had to go back for a fix on Tuesday and brought the Streamliner just in case.

We ended up replacing all the bass with the DI from the Streamliner. The sound from the REDDI was like night and day compared to the Streamliner. Weak and thin vs stout and robust with the Streamliner. Now, i have no other experience using the REDDI but to my ears - and the engineer - the Streamliner won hands down. He's even considering buying one himself now.... :D

The DI out in the Streamliner is a TUBE DI out.... Even in the PRE Setting... Pre is still a TUBE DI..
Post is also affected by tube but everything else down the line including EQ Everything "minus" the Master VOL

In pre-eq mode the signal is derived directly after the FET input scaling amp, in post-eq mode, the signal comes after the eq which is also after the tube gain stage.

Don't want to derail the thread, but I read a post or two last thread (part 9) about the interior blue lights not working on a couple of Streamliners. I've only had mine for a couple of days, but the blue tube lights work went off, and then came back on again. :confused:

Is this common?

there have been a couple of cases of this, me included.. if you PM Agedhorse he will take care of you..

After reading about it here on TB, I ordered a Jan NOS 5751 tube from Tube Depot for my STM900. It arrived last week and I finally got a chance to pop the lid and swap it into position 1 (closest to the bass knob). As described in earlier posts, the slightly lower gain of this tube vs the stock 12AX7 pulls the bass back a bit and improves the mid balance. It's a subtle but noticeable change in the right direction. I run the bass at 10:00 now instead of 9:30 but the low end has a little better focus and clarity. I really dig it, highly recommended! This amp is a bit fussy about the cabs that it pairs well with but I have a pair of fEarful-inspired 15/6/1 cabs, a pair of Baer ML-112's, a sealed 610, and an Xsonics 2155CF and it is stellar with all of these. I usually set drive and gain around 2:00 (button out), bass at 10:00, 2.5 kHz mid at 11:00, treble between 11:30 - 1:30 depending on the cab, and master to taste. There are a lot of nice amps out there but I really enjoy the tone and vibe of this STM900. :bassist::p
