Genz-Benz Streamliner Part 5

Good question. I don't think so because I was also running my Tascam through the Aux In on the SL900, and then through the headphones. [snip]
Let us know what happens!

It's odd, because the experience you're having is the polar opposite of mine. If I roll the bass control off when I'm listening through headphones, the tone gets very thin... and that's with a passive J and P.... no active bottom end.

I am a VERY firm believer that our ears can learn to like something over time that we previously disliked.

ditto. I totally agree.

I don't slap much, but when I do ironically I can't stand that sharp, grindy sound when I slap. So in a sense, it would be better for me if I learned to really like the sound of the SL900 as is, because slapping my 55-02 through this thing is a bit orgasmic.

I get a good amount of opportunity to slap in some of my bands. That funk and even sometimes the soul gigs I play. And I'm with you there, no sharp, grindy sounds for me! I'm using a 55-02 a lot these days myself when a 5er is necessary (and it usually is) and am loving the tone with my S900. The first note I played through it made me giggle. :p Tried to do an A/B with my RH450, but I just couldn't; I only wanted to play the S900. :smug:

"sold and un-sub'd''

"bought from you and sub'd"

I *hope* to get some decent clips with my passive 5 string jazz bass played through the Streamliner 900 and a variety of Avatar cabs. These include:

- Single 4ohm 2x12 neo
- One 8ohm 2x10 delta
- Two 8ohm 2x10 deltas

I'll also compare it with my beloved GBE 750.

It flattens out around 9 o'clock to me through the Berg, although still a bit beefier than the Shuttle 9.0 or RH450. Strange.

Everything I've heard about the tone you like tells me you'd be happy as a pig in poop with the Streamliner. My LOG P5 KILLS through it.
Thanks, man. I love tube amps, but I lean towards the "buttery goodness" side of my Ampeg V-4B pushed a little to the grindy side as opposed to the (brighter) SVT cranked to a full roar.

SL 900 sounds good through my Berg HT112ER for practice and smaller rooms, I now need to get a larger cab; 4X10 or 2X12. Sounds like the 10" speakers would be more punchy (if I am reading y'all's threads correctly). I find the amp to be very quiet in my practice setting, band practice tonight so I will put her to the test.
I do like how clear the sounds are, my Roscoe Century fretless sounds fantastic.

I think that's the Streamliner you're describing. No SVT in this thing that I can tell. The grit it imparts is more low-mid oriented I think, even when boosting the heck out of high mids it still doesn't have that razor-sharp buzz saw thing happening like an SVT does. In a place like Chicago there has to be a way you could try one out first.

Hey Scott, How do you like the S900 with the RS210's?

Gotcha. It is nice to have that SVT thing on tap, but my VT pedal can pretty much get there.

Believe it or not, I have yet to find a dealer of Genz bass gear in the entire Chicago area. I should PM hasbeen to see if I've missed anyone.

I think the S900 sounds great with the RS 210. Ken never did comment on this pairing since he's been back on board. I want to add the RS 112 but it's only rated at 200 w. Is this a bad idea, would I have to really keep an eye on the levels?

I was considering asking about a return for the Shuttle 9.2...

But heres why I'm NOT doing that
1. My Eden Nav & other SS heads sound like the Shuttle, I like the Streamliner for a "different round tube tone" the others CAN'T get
2. My idle poweramp will get a SS pre like the Sansamp RBI for a 2nd "Portable" amp. Yeah its heavy but man up... laptop bag for SL or Gig bag for power\pre? MAN UP!

That will give me 3 amp options... again if I could only have 1, Eden, Shuttle, Streamliner, RBI... its the Shuttlemax no doubt. If I could only have a P a J or a Sterling... I'd pick Sterling but I have all 3... why not have 3 amps too :)

If my Streamliner doesn't work with a gig that means the RBI will & vice versa. The Eden Nav is with a wireless & a tuner & thats a heavy unit to move

Tonal versatility awesome... The Streamliner tone is something I've never had before. Cool

Ive just listened to the 9.2 and the SL900 vids by Ed. I can definitely hear the sweeter high end from the SL....but it seems to also be able to get quite glassy.

Of course the 9.2 is much more crisp, but it also sounds quite sharp and jagged....if you like that kind of thing.

It does, which is something I'm also not really crazy about. The treble cut is nice because it does feel like a passive tone. The treble boost is a bit high for my tastes. I don't care for that glass. I prefer a shelving type control that boosts at 4k or so. It's not an issue for me right now because the treble boost on my 55-02 is ideal at 3k. I can see where that glassy treble control would really help with a dark vintage jazz for example.

FWIW, for anyone in the Santa Cruz or Bay Area who want to hear one - I'll be playing through the SL900 and LDS nEarful at the Crow's Nest (at the SC Harbor) this Friday 3/11.
Also doing a gig in Half Moon Bay on Thurs, but that's with my acoustic duo - same rig but low volume.

Similar offer, different region. If you're in LA, I'll be gigging my S900/AE210 combination Friday w/Steely Jam, 8pm @ Rusty's Surf Ranch, then Sunday doing the jazz/funk/soul thing 7:30-10:30pm @ Brennans Pub. No FOH at the latter gig so it is all up to the amp.

I just ordered an SL900 to use with my nEarful 15/6/1 cabs so I'm interested in hearing about this one. My 18Sound mid is padded back to match the 3015LF woofer but the cabinets are still too upper mid forward for my taste in a bass cab. I was considering an increase in the mid pad from -3 to -5dB but will hold off until I try it with the SL900. With my Shuttle Max 12.0 I need to goose the bass and low mids and cut the upper mids. Perhaps with the Streamliner the natural bias of amp and cabs will complement each other in the right places and deliver a powerful low end with presence and articulation but smooth - wallop with definition. Looking forward to it.

I am looking forward to hearing what you think on the AE210 paired with S900. No jaunt to LA, though, it's New England cool, wet weather for me :crying:

I have a feeling gigging out with the S900 & Berg HT112ER will be great; combo sounds real full at very low levels at home.

Just curious, is the Navigator similar in sound to my Eden WT-400? It's a lower power head I guess, but it has high, low, and 4 semiparametric bands (and a preamp tube).

If that head can approximate the (tonal universe!) of the shuttles, that would be great...
