Genz-Benz Streamliner Part 5

I've been prowling on this amp. Based on what I've seen/heard/read if I get one I'd go with a pair of 210s. I've really enjoyed having a modular rig. How do you think the Streamliner 900 would pair with the Genz Shuttle 210t cab(s)?

I'm looking at all the options for light, vertical 210 boxes. TC RS210, Berg AE210 (are they really redesigning to vertical?), GK MB210, GB Neox-210 (on the heavy side), and GB Shuttle 210t.

Setting with peak not sounding bad, but first attempt so keep this in mind. Setup. SL600 paired with 600w 4x10 hartke and 160w 1x15 hartke.

Gain 1100
Volume 1130
Bass 230
Mid 1200
Freq 600
Treble 330
Master 130

I tried to get "more" but started sounding harsh but I did find my grind/bright tone. We play a whole step down tuned and I am playing an active Traben Array 4. I am overpowering easily 2 line 6 guitards one with a 4x12 half stack and one with a 2x12 combo and fit drum kit. I am soooooo close to my desired tone. Metal people will absolutely love this head. You can make it so "heavy" sounding and its so easy to cut through. For my cabs honestly I think I should have went with a 900 but I am on the "too loud" point.

Either way this thing can definately produce devilish sounding bass that no one can mess with. I know lots are using passive p's and j's. I have never used one of those but for an active bass this works great. I'm about to try my more "jazz" sounding Traben as we speak. Much better pre. Will post back soon with that. Has a passive and active switch on it.

Well here goes. I tried my Traben Chaos Obsession NT 5 in active setting. Sorry passive guys I don't know how to dial in a good passive tone. Always sounds like I'm in a sewer.

Anyway the Chaos Ob has Rockfield pickups and preamp and I have never heard this bass sound this good. Its like it was made for a "tube" amp. I have never really liked this bass much because it was always a bit low on volume.

I only bumped my bass and pre volume a bit and it sang like no tomorrow. I'm sure not many people are into what I'm posting but with it "peaked" let's say 50% of the time it could put everyone to bed. No problem.

No worries this thing can produce any tone and any genre you want. Metal to what everyone else is playing passive J and P basses. Sorry so long I think I've had one too many. ;) If you are rocking an expensive active bass you will be in heaven.

I'm really coming around with the SL900. I did take everyone's advice and played with getting a good clean tune with the Gain engaged. It really does add mid-range punch and a little more upper-mid grind. Excellent! Spent some more time with the rhythm loop and playing underneath some stuff via a better sound pair of headphones, and it just sounds great. I'm getting the tone through those cans that I get through the AE212. I do think that a tighter cabinet with more upper-mid aggression would be a tad bit better for me, but I won't say the AE212 is bad at all.

Also, I tried running fdecks RTA software on my Windows 7 machine, and it failed miserably. I don't have an XP machine around, so this might take me a bit longer to do.

The more I play mine next to my RH450, especially at louder volumes, the more I find out that the RH450 is just not for me. It's weird how my ears got so used to the tone of it after all those gigs. I felt like I was always missing something, though. Definitely has an attenuated top end that I don't like and an overall 'boxiness' to the sound. And personally, I never thought it had a really solid punch. I'm MUCH preferring the STM900 by a pretty far margin. The punchiness of it is solid and fat, like I remember my DB750 being. Previously, I thought that I couldn't have that solid AND fat punch in my tone with a class D amp, which is why I settled on the RH450 in the first place. Now I know it can happen. Comparatively, my old MB F1 had lots of punch, but definitely wasn't fat by any means.

I'm finding better and better settings with my Jazz basses as I mess with it. Still familiarizing myself with the Gain/Volume interaction as well as the EQ settings. Overall, really digging it!

Has anyone tried an Aguilar Tone Hammer with a Streamliner? I'm curious as to the compatibility if you run it in front or through the preamp in. I'm going to dig mine out when I get home from the road next week.

I'm thinking that could be a solution to the 'mid-dip' concerns. Also running the Tone Hammer into the preamp in of the SL could basically give you a more, dare I say, "Shuttle" type of amp response. I think the power amp sections of the SL900/600 and the new Shuttle 9.2 are the same.

My Streamliner 900 just arrived, and it is huge. But now I'm wondering how a Shuttle 9.0 would compare.

If a Shuttle 9.0 owner in the San Francisco Bay Area would like to A/B them with me, please send a PM. I'm in Berkeley, and have it coupled with a Neox-212T.

Thanks...Lyle

I'm a Tone Hammer guy. I have played with mine into the SL900, mostly for the overdrive. The SL900 warms it up even further. I don't think it works all that well as an EQ with the SL though.

Like everyone else on TB, I'm totally interested in the Streamliners and have been looking for a place in NYC that currently has them in stock to try out.

I have a question for those who have the STM-600.

Some background info that could be helpful when assessing the question; my usual bass arsenal consists of:

Reverend Rumblefish XL
Fender Roscoe Beck IV
Lakland Skyline Hollowbody

I run a Tech 21 VT Bass pedal (usually set-up to a combo of "fat tube" and "SVT" character) as a pre-amp into my Shuttle 6.0 as I really like a warm fat sound but I don't need a ton of grind, just some to impart flavour. I find the Shuttle a bit too sterile for my tastes when I use it's pre-amp and I prefer to by-pass it with the Tech21 and utilize it's ample power.

I then ultimately run to a Schroeder 1210L which, as we all know, is a mid-centric, modern sounding cabinet. My band plays all-original alt-country with punk and rockabilly elements.

Question (and likely one that is difficult, at best, to anwer):

Will the streamliner get me in the neighborhood, sound-wise, of the Tech21 pre-amp / Shuttle 6.0 combo with it's warm oomph that can still cut? It would be nice to consolidate gear but as a practical person, if there is no big advantage, I could find better places to put my money.

Anyone run a similar rig and then compare it to the Streamliners?

Thanks in advance!

Stephen

When I am playing with one particular band of mine I am always running a VT pedal in front of regardless what amp I am using.
The VT "sound" (just like you I am using a "modified fat-tube" setting is my DI sound regardless what amp I am playing through. I take my DI sound after the VT, before the amp.
This has the advantage, I have a similar sound on the FOH wether I am using my Markbass SA450, the Hartke LH-500, my SA200 or now, the STL600.

Now, as to your question, I think the VT setting you describe (no extreme boosts or cuts) is working well with the STL. I tried this 2 days ago and I like the VT/STL combo better than the Tonehammer/STL combo. My cabs are the Aguilar db212 and db112s (mid oriented cabs as well)

Maybe you'd have to cut the lows on the STL a bit more with the VT, as if you were using only the STL.

But that's just me: VT for FOH, amp for stage sound!

I've had a loan of a friend's hand-held recorder, so I thought I'd do a few snippets. I tried to drive the amp hard without upsetting the neighbours...!

I don't know how useful these are, as they were done in a hurry, but I'll post them anyway. Apologies for the occasional clipping...

My current go to bass is G&L SB-2.
See a lot of reports that the stm 900 is a great match to a P-bass. Anyone happy playing this head with an SB-2, MFD p/j basically?

I haven't played any gigs with it yet, but sitting around the house, I have been quite pleased with my SB-2 with TI Jazz Flats. I am still in the very early stages of learning the SL...it sounds good with all of my basses...just with different settings...playing with the bridge p/u on the SB-2 makes for many different flavors. I usually back off the neck some, to lose the 'in-your-face' aggressiveness and either play just the neck p/u or roll the bridge p/u in to widen the sound a little. I only play rudimentary fingerstyle, and the setup through my GS112s brings a smile to my face. I am curious as to how the amp will sound in a band context...purposely standing off-axis and somewhat to the rear of the cabs...my impression is that it will fill the stage with no problem. As many have mentioned, rolling off the bass really tightens things up. The mid frequency settings seem to cover all of the areas that I used to seek, tonewise, without adjusting the mid level from about two o'clock, or so....works well for me...

Sounds great! I like the P clip the best. :bassist:

It definitely has some beef down low! I cant see from the clips why J players wouldnt dig it?! Maybe its just me, but I like a nice thick low end with punchy low mids, and a sweet high end.

I was on the fence about my SL900 order, but after more clips and realising it will sound much more clear up top than my RH450, im sticking with the order.
