GenzBenz Streamliner Pt 8...

Hey guys - I've been using the STM 9 for three weeks now, and for practice and gigging - it's been amazing. I'm mixing and matching with different cabs and I honestly can't figure out which I like best. My real love for this head came this weekend when we started tracking for an upcoming release. The engineer took a "wet" signal from the Genz and a "dry" from My Tech 21 NYC Bass Driver. I asked him later what he was putting on the mix to give my bass such bounce and he said it was all the Genz! He even made a point to tell me about how he usually mixed the wet and dry signals, but in my case he didn't need to do that. He is thinking about getting one for the studio so others can discover the tone that can be achieved. Oh yeah, and I had everything set at 12:00.

i often go post eq "wet" to the board. It sounds perfect, though if you do any major adjustments on the eq it could be a problem. I kinda wish that Genz would offer a DI based just on the preamp of the streamliner - anyone out there listening, agedhorse? :D
Just saying, I think that would be cool.

Why not just use the Streamliner. I can't see how it would make sense at the pricing point the Streamliner is already at.

Finally got a pic of the new Streamliner 900 in action! Really loving this head.

Running my passive Lakland through my Sadowsky DI/pre, then to the head. Been backing off the low end significantly...It sounds killer!

And seriously loving 6.5lbs!

I agree, and I do. If it were even smaller for those gigs where I knew I am not taking a cab (which is more common) that would be cool. I don't really expect one, and doubt i would purchase actually cause i have the amp already. But a fella can want can't he? :D Great product though, I just love it.

Woah killer! What's up with the Mac on top? What are you running? And where did you get that case!?!

Ha --- thanks. I run Reason with a little 25 key MIDI controller to handle our transitions. I had Brady Cases build me a custom rack to handle the laptop cause I wanted it near my rig.

If you're interested, you can see a video of it here.

That's the shizzle fo' sho'

Feel free to post some band video with the midi triggered transitions! I dig that kinda stuff!

This is a question for guys like Kirk and Red Planet who have played through all tube amps over the years. Has the streamliner made schlepping a heavy all tube rig to your local gigs a waste of time?
Or is there still a place for SVT or Mesa 400 or whatever in your arsenal? I got back into playing bass after a 40+ year layoff and have not owned an all tube head since the early 70's. Lovin the streamliner but still curious bout grabbin reasonably priced Mesa 400's in my area. Hope this OK question for the thread.

I'm mostly interested in this thread for similar reasons. I love my 76 SVT But I gotta feel Froggy to tag it along with the 810(s) to a gig these days...

I cannot speak for everyone.

I've been playing Bass for 35 years+ and used all tube amps exclusively. I tried a few things along the way for sure but always relied on the tube amps.

I currently do not own a Tube amp.

The Streamliner 900 takes the place and then some of any tube amp I could possibly want. Now if you have money to spend then more is always better. My backup is a Shuttle 9.0.

I, like others here, have played all tube amps all my 33+ gigging yrs. I gotta bad back at the moment & HAD to get rid of my tube amp(SVTII) & go light weight or not play at all.
The STL to ME (IMO/IME etc) isn't in ANY way like an all tube amp- to ME (remember this is JUST MY view).
Sure it's got a fat low end & has LOVELY overdrive & is a darn nice amp, But I used my all tube amps over the yrs for a clean sound mainly- obviously there was a bit of tube OD & compression in there naturally, but I NEVER tried to dial IN any overdrive.

I bought A STL600 hoping for the 'tube amp sound' in a light weight & easy to EQ answer,
BUT- Sadly the STL600 just didn't work for me. It's a lovely amp, but as ppl have mentioned in this thread, I seem to like the Genz Benz Shuttle amp better. I can dial in (or use the preset bass boost) a bit of lows, use the para-mid etc & that amp suits ME fine.

I spent many gigs & MANY more hours trying the EQ & different cabs, different basses & even a few different pre tubes, but couldn't get the STL to not sound boomy onstage- probly as they say- "the tone is in your fingers" (I must have FAT fingers ;-) - all the ppl in the 3 or 4 bands I used it in said it was muddying up the mix too.
I'm annoyed- not with the amp- with ME for not being able to get it to work for me!!:rollno:

I think it's a great amp & great design & even SOUNDS great by itself to me, but in a band setting , I just couldn't get it to work for me.

So, sadly I had to pass mine along. If it weren't for my back I'd no doubt buy another all tube amp, like I've used for 30 yrs.... & I've owned MANY in that time. From Fenders, to AUS made ones- Eminar, Vase, Wasp, to Ampegs- SVTII, SVT-CL....etc.. probly my fave was the old Fender Showman (I think it was called- it got stolen in about '.89 :hmm:).
Anyway- that's MY experience with the Genz Benz STL 600. Great amp, just didn't work for me. The Shuttle 6.0 does:hyper:

Ha -- well, I'm coming from an SWR Bass 750, so I'm saving about 30lbs on that rack! I love that I can take the Streamliner out and fit it in my backpack for rehearsals, recording, etc, too.

Not trying to hi-jack the thread, but I'm really curious about what heads all you folks are switching from. For those who are lucky enough to have an old school SVT or similar -- is the Streamliner a total replacement?

Me, from an SVT, no, it didn't replace it at all. See my post above ...... But that's just my 2c
