Yes, good gear. Did you adjust the "input type" on the Apogee? Looks like it can handle Instrument or Mic levels, you may have to switch back and forth to find the best gain-stage setting. I agree, the Logic bass models aren't great. Best to get it right at the source. Let me know how it goes!

Last nights setup...unfortunately the drummer had to bail, but we had a nice writing session and I was very impressed with the HPF ability to tighten up the drive sound. So far this is the best drive ive tried that can pull double duty for both bands.

How does a pair of 10-2 cabs compare to a single 210-3? I’m thinking about a pair of these to go with my 12-3 to give me even more combinations for different size requirements.
I don't have direct experience with the 210-3 but do own a pair of 10-2 cabs, two main differences per specs are power handling (250 watts for 10-2 vs 500 for 210-3) and sensitivity (95 db vs 100 for the 10-3). I'll bet that @Jeff Genzler would have some useful comparison info for you. I love using a pair of 10-2s, sound great and are such an easy carry!

Well... Just did a comparison using the MG350. Of course, I figured the (2) BA10-2 would be louder because of the the lower impedance but what surprised me was the low B was stronger/louder with it than with the BA210-3. And I had both setups on stands.

Of course a single BA10-2 wasn't as strong and didn't have as much low end. It's like what was said before, 2 cabs sound bigger than just double.

Drivers, crossovers, interior cabinet volume/geometry per speaker, arrays, and scalability all differ.

210-3 is 8ohms. Stack 3 of them for a potential of 6-10s with 2.67ohms impedance.

Or, use 2 210-3s with your 12-3 cab for 5 speakers total.

In both scenarios above you'll likely go louder and deeper than using similar combinations of 10-2.

The 10-2 is an 8ohm cabinet. It only allows combination scaling up to 3 10-2 cabinets, or 2 10-2s with your 12-3. 3 speakers total.

This response assumes amp impedance capability of 2.67ohms.

Maybe this was asked before but I don't even know how to do a search for this. I am confused as how am I supposed to 'gain stage' with Magellan 800. I kinda 'forgot' to post NEW AMP/CAB DAY :) I got myself Magellan 800 + Bass Array 12-3 and I have another BA-12-3 slant coming my way.

It has the gain pot and pad pot and I 'technically' know what it does. I am too used to tube amps (coming from guitar world and this being my first class D amp), and in that case the tubes clip if I apply too much gain, but the clean channel 'volume' is just the volume? Does it then matter if i pad the signal and keep volume at 50% which would give me more usable range on master volume? Or do I go as high as possible on channel volume, just before the clipping led lights up for the 'best signal to noise ratio'? I am just not too sure how the volume pot works here.
Is there a sweet spot? I didn't hear any tone difference when changing the volume.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be unhelpful, just wanted to point out that the manual addresses the functions of the controls of the different channels. This is the part that I was referring to, with my comments below:

CLEAN CHANNEL OVERVIEW – This channel provides natural, pristine, transparent reproduction of the bass instrument. The circuitry consists of a FET feedback type variable gain circuit that provides wide range, continuously variable gain with minimal noise.

So yes to answer your question, the clean channel volume is just volume, no tonal change as you go up and down. But as you increase the channel volume it will move you into clipping territory. Whether or not you need to use the pad control depends on how hot your bass signal is. I think of this as the more common "active vs. passive" bass setting. Engaging it will decrease the input signal but will not change the tone.

DRIVE GAIN – Provides increased amounts of overdrive and distortion as this control is increased. This control also rolls in a pre-distortion filter that rolls off lows and highs to specifically target a band of frequencies to generate harmonics from. This helps to create a smoother sound in the low end and keeps the high end from becoming too harsh or buzzy. This circuit also emulates tube distortion and offers various stages of overdriven harmonic tonal characteristics from vintage to classic to modern.
DRIVE VOLUME – This control sets the volume of the preamp after the DRIVE GAIN stage but before the CONTOUR filters, EQ, and MASTER VOLUME controls. Use this control in conjunction with the DRIVE GAIN control


On the drive channel, the interaction is between the gain control (which changes tone) and the volume control for the drive channel. Both of these also interact with the contour settings, and of course the master just sets the overall output level after you've determined the tone profile that you are looking for.

Honestly, the best way to determine how to use the volume of each channel vs using the master volume is to experiment and find out what works for you. There are too many variables (cabinets, bass impedance, your playing style, etc.) to determine the "sweet spot". There's a lot of interplay between the different controls going on here.

Master volume will do the exact same thing as on (guitar) tube amplifiers: adjust the overall loudness of the amplivier.

Now, the clean volume and drive volume can be used to balance the volume of the clean and drive channels to be equally loud. Pretty much the same idea as many dual (or more) channel guitar amplifiers. For example: my ENGL Ironball has clean gain, lead gain and lead volume to adjust the leads channel volume to be balanced with the clean channel, just like the Magellan 800 does.

Drive gain will adjust the amount of dirt in your signal, just like lead gain does on my ENGL Ironball.

The pad knob is useful if your bass has an overly hot signal which clips the input stage. For example: The Delano Xtender pickup in on of my basses delivers a stupid hot output signal, whereas my Sadowskys output is less hot. Instead of fiddling with the gain knobs all day, I just push the pad knob to adjust the two basses to pretty equal levels when using my Magellan 800.
Speaking in guitar terms:Most (modern) Humbuckers deliver a hotter signal than a single coils do and thus, with the same amplifier settings, will sound louder through the amp. Obviously, you would adjust your amplifier settings accordingly when using a Les Paul or a Tele.

Rgarding the detailed settings for your volume knobs: That depends. You can set the volume as high as you want as long as the input stage won't clip.

The idea is to go as high as you can on the channel volume without the clip light coming on. I have active four and five string Fender Jazz basses, and the channel volume between 11 and 12 o'clock works for my basses. I turn the volume on my bass all the way up and hit the E (or B) string hard and keep the channel volume just below clipping. Also be aware that changes in the EQ can change where you set the channel volume.

I leave the pad button alone (not pushed in) because my basses aren't that hot. I would only push in the pad button if I had a really hot bass and wanted better control over the channel volume.

Ok this seems to be more in line of what I was going for, and what I've been actually doing, I do have active bass but it's not that hot, so I can run the pad off and gain at 75% and barely tickle the clipping led sometimes. That just forces me to run the master volume really low.
Yeah that sounds all correct. Active vs passive doesn’t always determine a high vs low output. And if you’re keeping a fairly moderate volume (like practicing by yourself), it’s not surprising that the master would be really low.
