What I do - as mentioned earlier by some is adjust gain till the red is barely coming on - then back it off a bit since live I play with a bit more gusto…
Then on the drive channel I crank the gain till I get the amount of distortion I’m looking for. I then dial back the volume so that it’s just as loud as the clean channel so swapping back and forth doesn’t cause huge volume inconsistency.

then the master is your feel good knob - crank it till you feel good or your bandmates complain - whichever comes first! Lol
I honestly hardly ever need to above quarter master volume when using the 2 Ba12-3’s

Hopefully that helps a bit.

Question - I have a Magellan 800 and a 210-3 straight cab arriving soon - and am eventually going to purchase a 15-3 to maximize the power. Would a slanted 15-3 make sense? Would the 210-3 sit safely on top of it? Or should I go with a straight 15-3?

AFAIK the 15-3 is only available in the SLT version. I think Jeff has mentioned that the MG800 is designed to accommodate the SLT cabinets so you shouldn't have to worry about it sliding off.

I have a 210 slant on top of a 15 slant and have zero issues.

No issues with a slant 210 on top of a slant 15 (which only comes in a slant). MG800 doesn't budge. But don't put a full beer up there! ;)

The switchable HPF LPF is what makes this a winner. If I didn't use a HX Effects, this would be on my board.

Sm57 won’t pick up the lows as well as some others. I would use a bass drum mic or a large diaphragm condenser (this is the way I actually went AT2035). A lot of people like the 57 since it brings out the attack really well but you’ll likely need to boost the lows.

Thanks. That sounds pretty good. I had my Shure SM57 a mic a bit closer but it wasn't working well. Not a good sound. Then I tried a Shure SM7B set back about 8 inches and that was much better. I should try it even further back.

Oddly enough I was not happy with using a DI. I ran the DI line out the back of my Shuttle 3.0 and into an Apogee Quartet and from there into Logic Pro. So good equipment. But was pretty distorted even at lower volumes. Plus the Bass models they have in Logic don't seem very good. Or it may be user error - I'm not that experienced at recording direct like that.

Did you change the output to mic level - many interfaces don’t play well with line level. Super important to get the gain stage right.

oops I see others have already mentioned that. Also you mention bass models… I use post eq on my amp and hifi DI in logic then I use my speaker IR or you can choose on of logics speaker sims.

if you want to use an amp sim - change your amp to pre eq for the di
