Another tale of Genzler triumph...

Played a three hour gig on Sunday (myself on keyboard using a sampled Rhodes sound, an electric bassist, latin percussionist, and saxophonist/flautist) at a local brewpub that hosts frequent jazz performances in a dedicated listening room. A really nice gig that I've played a ton of times with various bands, the owner is a dream to work for, and the place is always packed with folks who came to LISTEN.

The downside? It's a terrible room acoustically, and we're tucked into a hard-surfaced three-sided nook. No matter what we do, the bassist is either boomy or thin where we sit; seems to be no middle ground. The piano is either harsh or muddy. Anyway....

This was the first time I played the gig with my current all-Genzler setup; Magellan 350/BA10 combo on the left covering the bottom end of my panned keyboard, and an Acoustic Array Pro (regular version) covering the upper right side pan, and amping the flute mic in its second channel.

Truly amazing. The sweepable mids really helped me tame some of the harshness but maintain definition, nice full bottom without being muddy...heck, except for my keyboard's action being nothing like a Rhodes (I still have my Stage), I could have forgotten I wasn't playing the real thing. I could almost FEEL the hammers hitting the tines. During really soft sensitive passages, there was a whole layer of subtlety and nuance available via keyboard touch that I've never heard nor achieved with any other equipment live.

Another gig tomorrow, different room. Can't wait!

Hey guys, I’m considering grabbing a NC212T for gigging and am wanting some opinions. The small footprint and low weight are what’s appealing the most to me, and also I always liked ceramic drivers midrange voice. I currently have a BA15-2 and 210-3 and have had a BA410-3, also have used a Magellan 212.

I am wondering if there are more similarities than differences between the NC212 and the Magellan 212? I found the Magellan to have a huge low end, smooth mids, and great projection. I would prefer less low end extension and more grit in the overall tone. I’ve also found that in smaller rooms the amazing projection of the BA cabs can almost be troublesome, sometimes I’ll be too loud for the room trying to hear myself closer to the amp. My traditional cabs seem to have less of the projection and more of the stage filling bass, and I think I’d like that in the Genzler flavor. Any opinions or advice from experience would be appreciated! Thanks!

Put your ba cab on a speaker stand so your ears can hear it instead of your knees.

Too much low end? Try turning the bass knob counter clockwise - always works for me…

More grit - use the drive channel on the 800 or if not using an 800(shame on you lol) you can grab the 4 on the floor.

Don’t want to stop you from buying new cabs but I’m not sure you’re using your amp controls to their best ability…

@ Sid the Kid ---- thank you for using so much of our gear. It is apprecatied. A couple of comments from the design-side and why we developed the Nu Classis series. With the ceramic drivers of the NC cabs, you will be experiencing a different flavor of tone, a touch of grind as you drive the speakers a little harder, but overall, the mid range of the NC cabs is smoother than the MG-212T. I've always thought that MG cab had a very "vocal" midrange, due to the natural output of those Neo Faital drivers. The ceramic drivers in the NC model are more "polite" in the mids, still very nice low end. Both cabs use the same tweeters and crossovers. Not sure if I would consider the NC-212T to have "too much" low end, while I could see the MG model being a little more agressive overall in the lows to mid range response.
I hope this is helpful as you consider the options.

The nc 212 from all the demos I’ve heard is a solid piece of gear for sure. And since I was being anti gas before - let me add the 4 on the floor is a really great drive and you should still grab one

I considered getting some of the 10-2 cabs but one is almost as much as the NC212T so here we are.

Maybe either the NC210T + NC112T or a pair of the NC210T's would come closer to your tone goals without EQ tweaking.

Personally, I love the tone of the NC115T.

Just had a quick experience to share regarding the Kinetix 800 and my BA-410-3 S2. I had never used the “thick“ switch until last night. This was an outdoor gig where I usually bring it along with my BA-115–3 S2. Rain was impending, and I wanted to have quicker ingress and egress… But I digress…

Of course I missed some extra thickness and bottom end without the second cab, but I flipped that switch down and felt more air movement and very usable low end that didn’t cause any speaker fart or anything.

The week before, on an indoor gig with also just the 410, I used the “lean” switch on my upright and it was a great low end tamer. I love the simple yet very adequate controls on the Kinetix even more than my old Magellan 800, and that switch is the first stop for great tone for me now… I usually have it on the fat setting FWIW…

I’m sure it’s a trade secret, but I totally wonder what exactly is changing with those low end switch settings… So musical and useful…EDIT: they’re in the manual! Thank you, @Jeff Genzler !!!

Here’s a pic for my of my “doubling” upright and electric rig using the Kinetix. This gave me separate DI’s for both instruments. It looks a little clumsy the way all the wires are routed, and I might eventually spring for one of those Grace Felix 2 preamps… Or just bring my acoustic array pro head as a preamp…cause, heck, 300W would probably cover the gig…

I can vouch, unequivocally, for how good and flexible an Acoustic Array Pro coupled with another of Jeff's array cabs sounds. In my case, it's just a "lowly" BA10-2-S2, but man, I love that combination.

If I didn’t already own 3 of Dukes Hathor/Changelings, I’d definitely be looking at some BA cabs to go with the Kinetix.
What a wonderful piece of kit.

Man, I’m really almost upset at myself for not being more patient on buying my big rig. I have the Magellan 800 and it’s been magical and I love it EQ features and it’s got a great DI but I also wonder what the kinetic sounds like I can only imagine What Jeff’s vision of amp sound like I feel like Gesler is almost like Bergantiños a little bit with her own type of sound, but very clear, sounding cabs and products really flat sounding trying not to color but yet to be goodness I was wondering how Jeff or anyone with experience could explain how the kinetic measures up to the Magellan and if having tubes petals For preamps, would it stack up to the kinetic or not? I imagine the kinetic sounds better because of more tubes, but if it gets close, might be able to justify staying with the class D I love my Gendler stuff and I can’t see me ever coming off of it.

I think even with the cabs i love the the tone of Jeff’s stuff. This 1x15” is a series one an I know the series II have better array speakers or from what I hear. Prob give more Clarity on treble. But I will say for single 15” paired with my 2x10 it does alot more then other “15s out there when talking about like higher end cutting and clarity. Having the 15” has made for a lot more interesting playing cause even with my band playing better venues, ive reslly not NEEDED a 15” a sometimes it’s to deep. But for when I want to do a bass bomb or bring in the B it’s always sssooo noticed in the best of ways. Like if we headline an i offer to back line or ive let some on the road guys just use the 15” to see how they like it! I can’t imagine what series II is like.

I can only tell you my experience, and I now own both the Mag 800 (early adopter) and Kinetix 800 (also early adopter).
Since I added the Kinetix, I don't feel anything is missing from my arsenal.
I use the Kinetix for my Zeppelin stuff, and the Magellan for near everything else, including the rare occasion I double on DB.
The warmth of the Mag has been "it" for me for many years.
the extra kick from the Kinetix as a rock head, well that's now "it" for me and my needs when I really want to rock and still sound incredibly articulate (so much that it makes me be a better player). That's my experience.

I've tried many other heads. Including some very good ones from Berg and Boogie. This is all I need....well, and this lamp.

I lucked out and got a decent price on a used but pristine 10-2 cab recently, so I finally have the complete Magellan 350 combo I’ve been eyeing up for the past few years. It’s going to be perfect for this weekend’s gig, mellow jazz quartet, small stage. Will definitely pick up another 10-2 soon, but in the meantime I have the two Focus 12 cabs which did a great job with the Magellan 350 at an outdoor gig last weekend, and the tiny Shuttle 3.0 8T combo with the 8inch extension cab which still remains perfect for small venue jazz gigs. It’s quite a humble collection compared to most rigs I see here but I (almost) have what I need to cover the types of gigs I play. In any case I think I have officially reached fanboy status!

Re the Mag350, I think you can get the bracket that holds the head on to that cabinet? The cab might be predrilled for it?

Yes this is correct. The MG-350-CRADLE is an availalbe accessory which can be added to any BA10-2 cabinet, Series 1 or 2.

This may not help since I have not tried Kinetix, but the Streamliner has been my all time fav amp for a while. I also use Magellan heads and I usually put a sushi box More and space heater in front of them. It gets very close to the streamliner. I imagine it would be a similar story for Kinetix. Genzler continually evolves though and I’m certain Kinetix is a slightly different animal than the streamliner. Therefore, it’s just a matter of time before I bite the bullet.

I don't have my Roscoe back yet (getting a new preamp installed) so I'll be using my friends Yamaha TRB 5. Not a bad substitute and should be fine for the genre.
