Anyone here use the Magellan pre/di on their board?

The Magellan Pre is awesome. It's got some fairly essential bass-centric tools that would be the first thing I'd look for if I was wanting to get anything other than a generic DI box.

1) 18dB/octave Hi pass filter: great for clearing some low-end rumble on stage and in the house.

2) 3-band EQ with parametric mids so you can really dial in the frequency range you want to boost or cut. I love boosting 1.5k-3k on a P bass to help it cut, or cutting 150-300Hz to tame boom. Either way making the upper mids more prominent than the lower mids.

3) The two available contours allow you to broadly shape the tone to add some personality, so it doesn't sound quite like a vanilla "DI".

For me, all I'd really want to add from there using another pedal or two would be a hint of overdrive and maybe some compression. Plus whatever other effects float your boat (octave, env filter, etc.).

The kinetix has landed! I’ve only had 15 minutes to play around, but I’m really happy with my purchase. It’s a very tube like tone in such a compact package. I came from an Aguilar ag700 that I love, but felt was too clean for my band. This solves that problem!

I really like going between lean and fat. I have a pretty resonant room, and going to lean cleans things up a lot. Then will use fat for outdoor spaces and better rooms.

We made our return to Kalahari Water Resort last night and it was fun as always. I think we’ll be out there a couple of times a month through August. Our soundman Sean (provided by the resort) has mixed a lot of bands out there and doesn’t really throw out compliments often…if at all (our lead singer works with him and can attest). Once we got setup and did our soundcheck he commented on how he forgot how good the DI on the amp performed. I said I was glad to hear that and we moved on. I don’t know how Jeff and crew do it but I have never had a complaint or issue with the DI…and I’ve played in some spots with questionable cables/power etc. Just another example of Genzler excellence.

First gig with the new Kinetix was last night. Outdoor street party setup with full PA.

I’m completely smitten by this amp, I have never heard a class D amp like this. I swear I had a tube rig behind me. I’ve tried so many class D amps, and none ever sounded as good as my tube amps or even my lead sleds. This is my new go-to. I was running it into 2 Aguilar db112’s with no tweeter. Mic’d one of the cabs, and send that to FOH. The sound guy said it was the best he’s heard me, and I had 3 or 4 people come up to me on breaks saying the bass sounded incredible.

The perfect amount of bite and warmth to my ears. The thing that had me smiling ear to ear all night. The most thing was what felt like power tube compression. There was this “squashed” feeling I was getting when digging in, that Ive never heard in an amp like this. It felt like an SVT.

I was thinking of selling my aguilars together get matching genzler cabs, but “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”…

Thank you for the initial review and so glad you enjoyed the tone the Kinetix delivered for you last night. I can see by your settings that you did get some of that old school growl with the cabs you were using.

I’m guessing the Nu series cabs is probably the most similar to the DBs? The 212 or single 115 is tempting to give a try.

Yes, you are correct. And the NC cabs are much lighter than the DB cabs. Several players on T/B u as e the NC-212T and is a great match withe Kinetix, if you were ever considering something different.

@ Lammchop93 -- Hard to compare as the NC-212T is a 4 ihm cab and is going to produce more output and punch and a nice smooth mid character. The NC-115T will feel deeper but won't be as loud. This cab has a nice mid character but I feel you've got to be a 15" cab lover to appreciate it. Hope this helps.

very similar to the settings I use, although perhaps a bit less on the gain side for me.
here's my Kinetix with settings from my last outdoor gig. P bass and BA410-3.

Overkill to use a RE/Q before my MG350/112 combo? I am looking at a little board with a tuner, comp to use for gigs where I use my amp. These are usually jazz, singer/songwriter, pit type gigs. Usually no call for effects, not huge volume. I have a Nano board that would fit my Sonic Research tuner, an Empress Bass Compressor, and room for something else.

To me, the main advantage of the re/Q with your combo, would be the HPF and LPF.

For less money you can get a Broughton Low + High Pass Filter or one of Fdeck's units.

What is the advantage of a LPF for bass? I'm not a slapper, so maybe it's aimed more to that crowd? My bass frequencies start to drop @ 4K, which is well under the operating range of a LPF ... right? Completely agree with the value of a HPF for bass!

You can use a LPF to cut highs. I like to have a LPF around 6-8k. It is especially useful if you use effects or distortion and don't want any harsh highs.

I will be using the RE/Q with my MG350/112ULV. As others have said, the HPF is very useful for boomy rooms and hollow wood stages. While I'm not much of a knob twiddler, I think the 5-band EQ is going to be very useful in getting the bass sitting properly in the mix.

Can one have too much EQ? The EQ on the MG350 is pretty good already - minus the filters.
