Yeah, bought a Doug Wimbish DW4 on a whim. Ended up selling my red Lakland and buying a limited run US NS-5 with dual J pickups. (That is my go to setup) Sold the DW4 and got the Classic 5. Nice clean, aggressive tone out of the Spectors! Using the Darkglass Anagram now too instead of the Quad Cortex.

I just bought a Genzler Magellan 350 and will be using it tonight for a club gig. It's not a huge space, and we have sound (so I'll be using the DI), but I'm looking forward to an improvement over my current bass amp, an Aguilar Tone Hammer 500. Right, highly rated and coveted Aguilar. But through my Markbass Traveler 102Ps, it has sounded muddy or thin. My practice amps sound way better. I researched the heck out of this purchase and learned that the Aguilar has built-in tone shaping that you cannot neutralize, and pairing it with Markbass speakers was a mistake. The Genzler is apparently renowned for transparency; i.e., it amplifies your bass (Jazz or EB Sting Ray) without screwing around with the instrument's sonics, if you set it right. So a Jazz sounds like a Jazz, etc. I hope my research is correct, and I'll find out tonight....

Have fun! I don't think you'll be disappointed. That MG 350 is something special. I've backlined a few shows with it and the other bass players are always impressed after using it.

Hopefully everything goes smooth for you tonight. The Genzler DI is superb and there are several of us in the group that can get away with a flat EQ and the contour knob dialed in to taste. If that’s not enough for you the bass and treble are set at (IMO) excellent points and the sweepable mids are an additional bonus. Keep us posted on the results!

I've played with the 350 flat with contour for a number of gigs with different basses. The only change I've made lately for certain gigs has been to use a Broughton HPF/LPF pedal to roll off the lowest lows and most of the highs more and differently than what the bass and treble controls do. This is my own "use case" trying to emulate the upright bass' lack of output below 80 Hz and above 600 Hz.

Before I dialed in with the Broughton, I got reasonably close with the 350 bass and treble controls rolled off quite a bit. But then I lost some of the near frequencies I wanted to keep.

When I'm not trying to do that, I really like the accurate flat sound of the MG-350 and modifying eq with onboard.

I’m considering a preamp/di pedal. I have a 350 combo I love but we are silent stage. I may try using it as my DI at an outdoor gig this summer.

Got the Magellan 800 since Feb this year (swapped my ShuttleMax9.2 and Shuttle9.2 for it) and are very pleased with its performance live and for rehearsal. It's a very gigable amp with just the things you need in good quality and no bells and whistles nobody really needs. I do the sound basically with the two contour presets only and use the EQ only in case there are some acoustic nastyness to be filtered out. My only wish would be an additional 'contour enable' switch or footswitch to enable a preset contour setting.

I prefer to 'forget' my equipment for rehearsals and gigs and rather like to focus on performance and music. I started with a GBE750 and my Genz-Benz/Genzler amps never failed since I used them for +20years. It seems the Magellan 800 is able to take over the baton.

Just curious about the necks on the Spectors.

I love the necks on Laklands.

How do the necks compare?

I've never played a Spector, but I've played a Warwick Thumb Bass 5 Bolt-On (for some reason I thought they might be similar to the Spectors) and I did not care for the neck profile as it was fairly thick - front to back.

Considerably tighter string spacing on the 5ers: 17mm on the Spector vs 19mm on the Lakland. That was a deal breaker for me.

I did not know that.

My preference is 18mm (I formerly had a StingRay 5 and now have a Cort B5 Element).
I have fat fingers (at least that's what she said).
I played a Ibanez SR 5 once that had 17mm spacing and I did not like it at all.
It easier for me to play 19mm than 17mm for sure.

I believe you'll find that to be true. It's one of the first things I noticed. I played four different basses through it all with different pickups and configurations. Each sounded like itself all with the EQ set flat as suggested and just the contour adjusted to taste for each bass. The EQ is very sensitive too.

Hope it works out as well for you as mine has for me. FWIW I'm playing through a pair of BA10-2-S2 cabs.

I’m also a MG350 player This is my setup. I’ve had the Magellan 350 combo for about a year now. So so capable. Before, I was using a combo that didn’t have a gain control so I had to get used to using gain and master volume. This rig has a GREAT sound. It shows me what my bass sounds like. I’ve really come to LOVE the contours. They just make a big difference. The speaker projects soooooooooo well also.

I play a 78 Yamaha pulser Japanese p bass which is ash and maple fretboard. I was wondering why the effect of the treble knob wasn’t so apparent when I cut, I then opened my tone knob on my bass and it was very evident it was making changes to sound. Smh still learning loool. I feel playing distance is important also.

I was thinking maybe getting the broughton or the genzler re/Q for the hpf and LPF. Where do you have it in your pedalboard chain?

Great rig. I understand the Empress but what does the 4 On The Floor add what the Magellan EQ does not do?
