George Murray - David Bowie 1976 to 1981

Just thought I'd share my experience from this weekend when I was lucky enough to perform at the World David Bowie Fan Convention in Liverpool and meet two of my musical heroes, George Murray and Carlos Alomar. They also guested on two songs with our band, The Bowie Contingent, with George playing my 71 P bass which was an incredible honour.

George is a lovely man and was kind enough to sit with me for an hour and let me ask him anything I wanted about his time with Bowie, and about bass playing in general. A wonderful, gracious human being!

That's phenomenal! I knew Carlos Alomar was still working, but hadn't heard much about George Murray lately. Those guys did some truly magnificent work with Bowie. The Nassau Coliseum (Murray) and Serious Moonlight (Alomar) live albums should be required listening for Bowie-bass fans.

George quit music in 1981 and worked in the school system in California until he retired last year. He's only started appearing at Bowie conventions since last summer, and this weekend was the first time in around 40 years that he's played on stage with Carlos. They also played Secret Life of Arabia live for the first time ever!



I know Carlos really wants to get a DAM Trio tour organised, so hopefully it happens!

Unfortunately he wasn't. Kevin was there and played a solo show on the Friday, guested with our band on Strangers When We Meet on the Saturday as well as playing Andy Warhol with Dana Gillespie, and then had an informal jam with Carlos and our singer on Sunday.
