I WAS going to post a pic of my brother goofing on my first new bass, a '73 Fender Jazz with w/b/w pg on black body and black blocks on maple neck, but Imgur seems to have deleted it. I'll have to hunt up the original. In the mean time, here I am enjoying my favorite fiver:

Well, here's the last of the Christmas gifts for Will. This bass was very cheap. We got it from Amazon where I had a couple hundred bucks in Amazon money and we applied it to the bass. I wasn't sure how to flip the nut because it was glued in! Then it struck me-- just use your string nut file and file two of the slots down to accompany the larger strings (I restring righty). It worked! This bass is a gem! Loving playing it-- it has a nice, grunty growl and crisp high end.

Thanks @beans-on-toast . I was thinking about a new preamp with three band EQ and adding stacked knobs so I can also control mids. Maybe later if the bass performs well I'll send it out to get the electronics done and a custom brass nut.

I have no idea what kind of pickup I should use, but to my older ear, the bass sounds great as it sits. Oh, yeah, maybe get Ultralight tuners. I was told that it might shave off 1/2 a pound of weight but another TB'er warned that it may also cause a dead spot on the neck.. so.... not sure. For now, I'm really enjoying the bass for a cheapo...

...Cleaned up, restrung, the neck needs a bump...I should put new tuners on...

High-end tuning machines seem to me a good investment. Absolutely no experience with how tuners affect necks and dead spots. I replaced my stockers with ultralights. The original tuning machines on the Stingray are crackerjack. Bass stays in tune for days.
