Saturday Reprise

You always hear of people joining band but can't really play. In a recently posted video, Ed King talked about how he was just leaning to play guitar when Strawberry Alarm Clock was recording their first album. He was much better when they got to their second album and even more so by the time he joined Lynyrd Skynyrd. Tina Weymouth was another example. Her friends pleaded with her to join them and form the Talking Heads. It was more important for them to have a like minded friend in the band than someone who could actually play.

An interesting tribute to her. A musician and songwriter that could.

As an aside, Tina's dad recently passed away just shy of his 103rd birthday. His name was Ralph Weymouth. A Vice-Admiral, he was a vetran of WWII. The Korean War, and The Vietnam War. In Vietnam he commanded Anti-Submarine Warfare Group 3 in support duties in the Tonkin Gulf. Keeping the big ships safe. He held the distinction of being the oldest living graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy.

Tina was one of eight children. Some siblings went into journalism. Her brother is a known architect. His one time mother in law was Katharine Graham, who oversaw the Washington Post from 1963 to 1991. A tumultuous time before journalism died.

Obituary: Ralph Weymouth

Personnel in Naval commands change frequently. At the time that I was a very minor part of ASWGru3(1966)aboard USS Yorktown, CV(S)10, someone else was in command.

Well , it could have been a lot worse. Played a gig tonight with the new band. Actually , that went very well. It was the trip home that could have turned out really bad. I was about a mile from the venue in an area that I am not too familiar with. I decided it was time for a cigar so I pulled one out and went to light it with the lighter I keep in the truck. It was pretty cold out so the lighter wasn't exactly up to par. Just a tiny flame so it took me a bit to get the thing lit. When I finally got it going , I noticed I was in the left turning lane. (It's a long lane for turning off on about three roads.) Just about that time I also noticed the red and blue lights flashing behind me. Pulled over , threw it in park , turned on the inside lights and opened the door. Young cop came up and told me I was being pulled over for being in the wrong lane. I told him why. A full field sobriety test followed. Nine steps heel to toe one way , nine steps heel to toe the other way. Sit on the front bumper of the cop car and follow the pen in his hands with my eyes. Holy crap , that was worse than doing karaoki to a song that you don't know. Stand on one leg and count to ten. My crappy knees and ankles put a stop to that around number six. Blow into the little yellow box until your eyes start to pop out. Then he told me to go sit in my truck. As he went back to his cruiser , I heard something coming across on his radio. He came back a minute later , handed me my license and told me to have a nice night , then jumped into his cruiser and headed down the road with his lights flashing.
Good thing I don't tend to drink much when I playing anymore.;)

If you can read this you are fine. If you can’t read it, you’ll get in trouble.
