When I was a child we lived in Coventry in the UK. I used to play in areas much like that. Coventry was devastated by bombings during the war. We didn't have a lot in those days but we never starved. That picture made me sad for all the lives senselessly lost.

The expression is still used today when a group wants to ostracize someone, keep them out of the loop. During WWII, if someone was deemed to have loose lips, they were sent to coventry.

Perhaps the modern day equivalent is to be unfriended or blocked on social media.
