Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

When I was in the first grade (IIRC) we had inkwells on our desks and had to learn how to write with pen and nib, my efforts usually just ended up with big black blobs on my paper with holes in it. I don't remember if I ever dipped the girl's pigtails in front of me though but that would have been right up my alley back then. I was never any teacher's favorite pupil although my family was well known in my town and known for being good pupils and exhibiting good behavior until I came along. All my younger brothers and sisters had to deal with my reputation when they had my former teachers.

Before we were entrusted to use a nib in the first grade, we had to prove ourselves with a jumbo sized pencil. You weren’t allowed to have your own, they would pass the pencils out before that part of class, then collect them. An instrument of writing was meant to be special. There was some ceremony that went with it. Teacher’s pet would stand infront of the class sharpening them before they were distributed.

I'm sure there was some such organization as that in my class too. They were not going to give out sharp implements of destruction to us without making sure we weren't going to stab each other with them first. Miss Lindsay also ran a tight ship, followed by Miss O'Brien and then Miss Dunn, we finally got a Mrs in the fourth grade: Mrs Gibbons.

We had nibs on a stick, like a small paint brush. You dipped. For pens that held ink, either twist the end, pull up a leaver, or remove the top and pump a bladder. I’m might still have on of those.

The advantage of all these pens is that you could flick ink onto people. They didn’t call them fountain pens for nothing. An ink fight would ensue, followed by the strap.

Maybe why I failed the first grade. The first and second grades were in the same room. It was a three room school. On the first day of class, you saw who passed, they got to move to the other side of the room, and who didn’t.

As time passed and I got passed to the subsequent grade (probably just because they didn't want o deal with me for another year) I ended up in the 7th grade in Junior High school where again I was a thorn in the side of my unfortunate teachers. The gym instructor/Science teacher especially hated me so when I got thrown out of a class they would send me to the principal's office and then he would sometimes send me to the gym teachers classroom. I did not like that at all. One day I got sent to his class and he made me sit way in the back by myself in a desk so of course I started my usual clowning, making noises and things like that when he was turned around. He didn't say a word, just stomped to the back of the room and grabbed my long hair and pulled me all the way to the front of the room by the hair while I was still sitting in my desk. All I can remember of this is the scraping sound of the desk's feet on the floor and the girl's gasps. He then pulled me out of the desk with one hand by the front of my shirt and dragged me out into the hall and slammed me up against the lockers which made a racket, again lots of high pitched gasps. Did I saw he hated me? I don't remember anything after that:laugh:.

We had an art teacher in elementary school who wore an incredibly large ring on his finger. If you were causing a problem he'd come up behind you and bonk you on your head. This and @bobyoung53 's teacher's behavior sure wouldn't fly today. They'd be out of the classroom, and out of a job, quicker than s@&t.
Sadly. :crying: We need more discipline in the schools! :D

Life has painful moments that stay with you and contribute to your character. For those inflicting them, they are probably just another day that they don’t even remember.

Far too often true.

I can think of a couple of moments that are freakin’ seared in my memory where I sometimes wonder if the kid who caused me that pain ever thinks about it.

We were on lunch break at [a newspaper you've heard of] and uncertain how the conversation actually turned in the direction it did. Said out loud — I wonder what ever became of those school bullies. Project manager looks me in the eye and says I was a school bully.

The penny drops.
