That is more like the kind of stuff you hear on the CVR during a mishap investigation. Although I've heard a number of traffic calls where the pilot response is "no joy, still looking" numerous times in row...if the traffic is VFR and you're at a lower altitude that can be a little disconcerting. In fact those are the kind of transmissions that often precede the one you asked about. :)

That's why I scheduled as much of my travel east->west as possible. Those quick Chicago->Europe flights were the killers. And the flights back kinda sucked, too. Too short to sleep. I need at least a 10 hour flight. Then I can get 5-6 hours. Noise-cancelling headphones are a must! I detached the cord to my Bose cans, turned on the noise cancelling circuit, put on the eye shades and snuggled up to a 1 liter bottle of water. NO alcohol if you want to sleep.

Sennheiser is my choice for noise canceling headphones. In part that's the reverse snob in me who see everyone using the same cans. My current headphones are Senn HD4.50 BTNC, and they double as a headset :thumbsup:

Ya, what's the sense of having bass if you can't hear it ;).

My wife and I have come to a compromise. She has excellent hearing and listens through whatever speakers she has. I do not have excellent hearing so I am relegated to Head/Ear phones so as not to disturb the boss and can still hear the bass.

Marriage is a compromise, so I have heard this pun is intended...

All I need do is look at which noise-canceling headphones are sold in airport shops to know what the Teeming Millions are doing. That doesn't make any better than another, really. What I want is no airplane noise when I push the button :cool:

There are several seats right next to the engines on the venerable medium haul MD-80. The 3+2 seating in steerage class really ain't so bad. Listening to music is just a bonus at this point. Had some pretty enjoyable breakfasts up there.

When airports feel more like home than home, I don't even know what's to say. Known on sight at airline clubs. The clubs are an oasis of peace and sanity for the hardcores ....

Never know what may happen or who one may meet. Shared a drink in the Admiral's Club with Lynda Van Devanter's XO. She promised to say hello for me.

Back in the '90s, it was Bose or it was crap. Around 2010, I bought Etymotic Research's hf2 in-ears. MUCH easier to carry around, and no batteries. I paid $180. The current replacement, the hf3, is $85. Not (yet) a fan of Bluetooth ear buds.

It's easier to do with the piped in system as you don't have to dial in the new frequencies at all the center and departure/approach/tower/ground control hand-offs. Some aircraft do not have the capability to pipe ATC into the onboard entertainment system and allowing passengers to hear it is pilot's discretion as best i know.

Scanners can be hit and miss at picking up the ground side of things in an aircraft at altitude, but you'd likely hear the pilot's comms quite well. Having a scanner in today's (post-911) world would likely cause paranoid behaviors from the crew and/or other passengers. There is a smartphone app I believe that does work well and would be a better option than a scanner (assuming the aircraft has WiFi).

Some of those ATC conversations are not something that a pilot would want their passengers hearing. Fortunately, clearance for push off, taxi, and takeoff are done digitally at some airports and aircraft with tracking annunciators affirming to the pilots where they are and what to do.
